Hey guys, is it possible to remove the casing on the Crucial M4 or the Samsung 470 SSD so it would fit in the X220?
Besides the Intel 320 series, what other SSDs will fit?

The M4 has a spacer you can remove to fit in the X220. Also the C300 has the same spacer that you can remove.

The first revision of the M4 (factory 0001 firmware) does not come with the sticker so you can remove the spacer without voiding the warranty, if you can grab shorter screws somewhere else.
The second revision of the M4 (factory 0002 firmware) does come with the sticker now so if you remove the spacer you void the warranty by breaking the sticker.
I would stay away from the Intel 320 Series due to the 8MB bug unfixed by the last firmware update. -
I'd ask unless you need WWAN, why wouldn't you want the 310? That would allow you to keep the main drive for storage.

I had a M4 in my X220, but then I moved it to another rig. If you remove the spacer, you MUST put electrical tape on the flash chips or else you risk a short. Without the spacer, the NAND chips make contact with the top case of the drive.

The Samsung 830 SSD is due to be released any day now...this is a Sata III 7mm drive (so no mods req'd to fit X220) and performance is on a par with the Crucial M4. Just be patient man, good things come to all those who wait
