I created recovery media on an external USB HD no problem. I subsequently did a backup image on the same USB HD. My question is.... Do I need to create recovery media on a CD/DVD to perform a restore in the event my internal HD goes south? I read in a thread that I would need to restore my OS from created CD/DVD recovery disks first then a restore of my backup disk image (from my USB HD) to complete the process. Why can't I just boot from the USB HD for a complete image restore?

Not making recovery disks is like not wearing seatbelts and claiming that you're safe because the car is very cushioney.

I think what gis1234 was asking was, if the "recovery disks" were on a hard drive (as opposed to on a burned optical disc), could he/she use that to recover from -- is that right, gis1234? If that were the case, then recovery media have been made, just on a hard drive and not on a set of optical discs.

I'm not sure how that would be done. Myself, I burned the discs (1 CD and 2 DVDs), and subsequently ripped the discs to disc images (.iso files) on another hard drive, so I can always burn recovery discs from them.

That's the first thing I'll do once I get my W700. After that, I'll install XP 64bit... sorry Vista!

that's right tbessie. When I run the process "Create Recovery Media" it's doing so to the external USB drive. The process where it copy's files from "preboot"?, etc. I could be mistaken , but I was under the impression that this process was creating a "bootable" drive. And it does this every time I do a backup. One thing I wonder is, does is have to write the image to the same media (CD/DVD/USB HD) as the recovery media?

I should also note that my questions above are within the context of me using the Thinkvantage Restore and Recovery 4.2 toolset.

Will Recovery discs allow you to reinstall Windows if the hard drive dies and you have to replace it?
