I have a new T61 and when I try to watch a DVD every software I've tried tells me Create Overlay Failed. I searched Google, but none of the solutions I found fixed it.

I am on Vista. Most of the solutions I found said to turn off Netmeeting which Vista doesn't have.

    Any ideas?

Also I've got the nvidia video card on here and I can't find any interface to make adjustments. Is there one?

    Thanks.

Right click on the program you want to use to watch the DVD with, click Properties, Compatibility, and check "Disable desktop composition." Doing that will disable Aero (which uses an overlay) while the program runs. You could also try VLC.

My WinDVD5 player stopped playing DVD files (even though I think it still played DVD disc, not sure about that) and every VOB file I tried playing, WinDVD5's player opened up and prompted "Create Overlay Failed. Please lower your screen resolution or color depth and try again.".

What worked for me was unticking my unticking "Enable write combining" (XPH/SP2/Sony/RADEON IGP 345M) as found display properties> setting> advanced> troubleshoot tab (and of course the required re-booting) and now my WinDVD5's again plays VOB's.

Mplayer and VLC are great options for open source A/V playback.
