I have a T21 that I have used for almost five years now - great machine - and have ordered a new T43 (2668-94U, 15" Flex, 7200 RPM HD, SXGA+, ABG & Bluetooth). Unfortunately, my T21 is giving me problems and I need to stretch it until my T43 is in (which I fear could be a while given the lack of a clear delivery date and the comments elsewhere on this forum), and would like to keep it as a spare. I would appreciate any help.

    I have two problems:
    (1) The computer periodically simply shuts down without warning -- I am not talking about Blue Sceening, but rather powering off without being asked.
    (2) The screen sometimes goes dark, and you have to move the cover back and forth to find a spot that will make it come back on.
So folks will know, I have already updated to the most current BIOS, installed the IBM software delivery program and updated all drivers (GREAT PROGRAM!), and following the instructions on the IBM website I took the notebook apart and pressed to contact points for the light wiring together to see if that would solve things. I am at a loss.

At present, I am most concerned about the sudden powering off, although that could change if I can no longer see the screen simply by moving it back and forth.

    Any suggestions[?]

5-years is old for a laptop, sounds to me like it's simply dying of old age [V] the screen issue would be indicative of a connection between your lcd and motherboard is wearing out...the actual wires might be fraying/getting twisted (i actually had this happen to me on a pre-production t43 ibm gave me...oops, that wasn't old age but poor construction on an initial batch of t43s). the shut down problem could be due to memory (RAM) that's gone bad, so you could try replacing that, but it also might be a larger issue with the motherboard or something. the only way to truly find out is swap in some different memory and see if that solves it. let's hope that t43 hurries up and gets there for you [ :)]

Thanks for the response. I guess a magic bullet is too much to hope for. As I don't have any other memory that is right for this machine, and it does not seem worth it to get any under the circumstances, I guess I will just hope that it lasts. . . . .
