The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. For current discussions, many NBR forum users moved over to NotebookTalk.net after the shutdown.

Could someone have a quick look for me?

You have the right RAM, I'm sure of that, HD I'm not sure, but probably is.

-You could open the HD and see if its the same type.

Both are appropriate. Your SL400 uses DDR2, and every current ThinkPad (except x300/x301) uses a 2.5" SATA hard drive.

    FROM LENOVO SITE:
    Depth Metric 70 mm
    Height Metric 9.5 mm
    Height US 0.37 in
    Weight Metric[2] 0.101 Kg
    Weight US[2] 0.223 lbs
    Width Metric 100.0 mm
    Width US 3.94 in

    COMPARE:
    FROM THE HARD DRIVE SPECS
Height (max) 9.5 mm (0.374 inches)
Width (max) 69.85 mm (2.75 inches)
Length (max) 100.5 mm (3.957 inches)
Weight (typical) 110 grams (0.238 pounds)

They don't seem to be matching exactly, does that not matter much?

ALSO, is there a thread on here to run me through the process of putting a new hard drive in and installing software etc?

That difference (except weight) is less than 1mm in all categories. This won't be a problem. In addition, the hard drive uses a caddy with rubber rails, so it will fit properly.

Lenovo posts detailed hardware maintenance manuals for all ThinkPads. You can find the SL400/SL500 one here.
