Hi all, haven't posted here in a while! Recently I bought a used W520 because I've always wanted the workstation version of my old T520. Definitely missed the FHD screen.

It's got the i7 2760qm, and my question is, how does this CPU compare against the latest quad core CPUs on the market? And what is the most powerful CPU I could put in this thing?

The i7 2760QM is still a decent processor in its own right, not that far off in terms of benchmark from some of the latest mobile offerings when you consider its age. I think you be hard pressed to notice any deficiencies in most computing scenarios.

The fastest processor you can put in the W520 is the Intel Core i7 Extreme i7-2960XM which was a very expensive option at the time of its release.

Yes, the 2760QM remains a very good CPU to this day. The only thing that performs better than it are higher end quad cores of the same gen and quad cores that are more recent. Even then, the performance gain isn't much, so you'll be good for a while still. It will still run circles around any ultrabook CPU that you see around a lot these days and then some.

The i7 2670Qm should be comparable to the haswell i7 4702mq
and it still wayy faster than most newer thin and light laptops with dual core cpus
you can upgrade up to the i7 2960xm for 20-30% performance improvements

the fastest you can put without having to upgrade the heat sink, is the 2860qm.

to use any 'xm' processor, you need to upgrade the heatsink to the 55w item
