Here is my situation. I am ready to pull the trigger on a new T60 from Lenovo's website but am concerned about the high frequency buzzing/beeping/screeching sound that plauges some laptops with the Core 2 Duo. I owned a new Dell D820 that I had to return because the high frequency noise was extrememly irritating. I don't want to order a T60 and have the same problem.

I would like to know if this noise is only noticiable on certain brands and if it is noticable on the T60. I have heard that HP notebooks suffer from this noise also. Right now I am considering both the 14.1 and 15.4 widescreen T60 so if anyone owns either of these with the Core 2 Duo I would greatly appreciate it if you could let me know if your laptop makes any kind of noise like the one I described.

Also, is it all Core 2 Duo processors that make this noise? I am considering getting the T7200 but if one of the other chips doesn't have this noise I would upgrade/downgrade.

I've got a friend with a HP DV6000t, and his does that as well. My HP with an AMD Athlon does it too. Could be normal, or could be certain brands...

Thanks for the info, I'm hoping someone that has a T60 14.1 or 15.4 could let us know if this is a problem for them.

    I'm using a T60 with a T7200 (as my signature states).

The only noises I ever hear are:

    - The fans (an occasional low hum that goes on more frequently when charging)
    - The optical drive (this is by far the loudest noise, however, it only makes noise when I first put a disc in... can't even really here anything when I burn something onto it... it's weird)

    No high frequency noise what-so-ever.

I believe what they are referring to is either the buzzing exhibited by the dynamic switching of the CPU's voltage (SpeedStep) or what I have seen to be caused by the USB controllers. I had this same problem and I followed the directions in one of my threads in this forum, which was basically go to teh Device Manager and then turning off the option to "Disable this device to save battery power" under the USB Root Hubs.

I currently have an HP DV9000t, core 2 duo, I haven't noticed any high frequency noises.

My T60 20077JU (15" flexview T60 with 2.16 C2D) makes the sound for 2 key parts. One is the CPU power management circuitry that when disabled makes the noise go away. The other is the video card when under certain stresses will make the noise.

Many devices make these noises, it just really annoys those with better hearing. Most people cant hear the high freq stuff, and they wouldnt know if it had the noise or not in the first place.

got it in my x60, and compaq v6000t. most people cant pick it up since they dont listen for it unless you specifically point it out. i hear it all the stinkin time since i notice any odd out of place sounds. annoys the buggers outta me, so i did what i could to fix it and d/l Folding@home to run on 1 core of my lappys. takes a bit of juice when on bat, but i dont keep the system disconnected for too long. if that happens, i just disable F@H and deal with the noise.

I have a Z61P and an uniwill lappy and both are fine, untill you plug them both in a connected power outlet! Then both laptops start to produce a high frequency noise... Could it be that multiple powersupplys interfere with eachother? (think calculators, desk lights, regular pc, etc).

This is common to many designs it may be eliminated in the santa rosa update in principle but the make of the laptop is nearly irrelevant they all do it though some are quiet and some are loud depending on where the speaker wires are sitting and so on.
