The T400 doesn't run that hot anyways, so I don't think it is necessary. All I would recommend is buying/building some sort of stand to elevate your laptop from your desk surface, so that air can flow beneath your laptop. It can be as simple as propping the two rear legs up on erasers. Personally, I built a laptop stand out of K'Nex for my T500 :)

The problem with laptop coolers for the Thinkpad T-series laptops is that the CPU and GPU are both close to the left edge, and in the case of the CPU, close to the corner. Most coolers have their fans in the middle, so it would not significantly help the cooling of the laptop.

I don't use a cooling pad (a surface with holes cut out, props it up, fans, etc.) really. When I am using the computer on my lap I just have this thing that is basically a flat wooden top with a nice pad on the bottom for comfort. However, I guess it would cool the laptop better than if you had the vents buried by using the T400 on a blanket or something.. For my desk I have a sort of cooling pad type thing (it has a bunch of holes cut out and it elevates the laptop) but I really only use that to keep the keyboard angled for ergonomic reasons.

I have a Zalman NC-1000 for my T400. Like MidnightSun said, most coolers have their airflow in the middle, such as mine. I even placed my top left part in the middle of my cooler and it didn't really do anything to drop my temperature levels since they were already rather low.

My SO bought me an E-Pad laptop desk from Brookstone last year for Christmas. It isn't a cooler, but it's really nice to use on the couch, and the built-in tilt means the keyboard is positioned perfectly for me.

My T400 runs so cool compared to any other laptop I've used, I can't see myself ever needing a cooling pad. Of course, the P-series Penryn processors are among the coolest-running CPUs Intel has made (short of the low-voltage SU-series for ultraportables).

Thanks for all your responses. I'll build a self made propping device for the laptop. Thanks.
