I'm writing again about a problem I've been having with my T61. A couple a weeks ago the fan started to make a noise. Then last week the computer showed the "Fan Error" message at the start and then shut down. The brother of a friend who fixes computers for a living opened it, cleaned the thing etc. etc. and charged me quite a lot of money. But the computer is still making this noise although so far it hasn't shut down. He told me that it's normal because the computer is four years old, but I don't know what to think or do. Should I take it to the official service (or whatever it is called) and have the cooler replaced? The problem is that I do all my work with this computer and so, as you can imagine, the whole situation is a real pain in the ...

Any advice will be most welcome.

mine is from the first batch T61 laptops and I dont have fan problems. Just replace the fan assembly if the fan itself is giving you issues, there are plenty for sale on ebay. You'll need thermal paste to apply over the CPU and the GPU once you take the fan assembly off (also called heat sink).

Yeah, I suppose that it is just back luck. The reason I bought this machine was that I wanted sth. that would last many years.

So you think that I should try to replace the heat sink now and not wait until I get the fan error message again. The problem is that I need to work.

Is it a grinding noise that varies with the speed ot the fan?

I have now a program that measures the temperature of the machine. When the temp. goes up, the fan starts working and makes the noise. I don't know how to describe it, but it's the typical noise of a fan that isn't working properly. I don't know whether it might need lubrication, because in theory the person who worked on the computer cleaned it and when I saw the part there wasn't much dirt.

A bit of grease might help.

My t61 had the same problem 6 months ago. Luckily I had warranty so I sent my t61 to Lenovo and it has been running great since then.they replaced the heat sink I think.
It is the only problem I be had with this laptop. It is right to think Lenovo is built to last

get a dust remover, you can find one in the computer section of Walmart. remove your keyboard and blow clean your fan from inside out. then blow from vent to vent on the exterior.
if it doesnt help, watch this video and put some oil in it see if it helps ??Thinkpad T61?? - YouTube
if that doesnt work then you are SOL. get a replacement fan on ebay.

I wouldn't recommend oil in your fan. If it is making a grinding noise, the internal fan bearings are shot and you will need a new fan/heatsink which isn't horribly expensive. Plus I think 4+ years isn't bad for it to go out, though my T60 has yet to fail **knocks on wood**

Knock on wood, my T61 is quickly approaching 4 years old in a few months, and she's just as quite as the day I got her brand new back in 2008 :)
