I've been looking at the T440s lately, and thinking about buying one.

Is it, however, a bad move to buy one right now as it is almost one year since it was released? How often are they updated, and are they just updated with new hardware specifications, or do the changes include change to the product design like the keyboard etc.

    Thanks for all your help.

In the past, Lenovo would refresh their Thinkpad T-series lineup every year, shortly after the annual Intel CPU refresh. Now that Intel's release cycles are delayed, the Thinkpad release cycle has also been delayed, with a bit more variability. Historically, Lenovo and IBM changed the chassis every couple generations, (ie: T4x series, T6x/Tx00 series, Tx10/Tx20/Tx30 series), but that may also change with the longer release cycles.

My philosophy for buying anything technology-related is to buy if you need it, since tech is refreshed so often. If you need a new computer, you should buy it now. If not, wait.

TL;DR: It's anyone's guess whether the replacement for the T440s will share the same chassis or not. Buy the T440s now if you need it.
