I'm considering moving over to a W520. I've been using a Datacolor Spyder3 setup to manage my monitor's color profile.
The option for the colorimeter on the W520 is appealing - but doesn't allow me to manage the color on an external display.
Can I continue to use the datacolor for my office monitor with this machine, or will it not play nicely with the built-in color management software?
Thanks in advance!

There's no need to buy the built-in sensor and software if you already have the Spyder3.

I was under the impression that the built-in colorimeter would do a better job of calibrating the laptop screen than the Spyder3 would. Is this not the case?
-
Probably not. The Spyder3 will probably outperform it [significantly?].

The Datapro software and controls with the Spyder3 are more fine grained than the Pantone hueyPRO stuff that comes with the built-in sensor.
If you have the extra $70 to blow for the sensor and software, get it. But the hueyPRO software that comes with the W520 will only work with the LCD panel on the W520. -

I am not sure. I never tested that.

As far as going with your suggestion of just using the data color - does the 520 have user accessible contrast and brightness?
-
Why not just use the spyder 3 on both monitors? The spyder3 software switches well. Just a suggestion. That's how I use it on my laptop (no built in huey obviously) but I have my monitor set to switch back and forth, not display simultaneously.
