I am pretty picky, I want a machine to also look good and so on, but W520 is pretty much perfect laptop, more powerful for gaming than M14X from Alienware and a killer workstation (may be a touch screen option would make sense for me coz we do some software design for touch screens and would be nice to try it faster on laptop).

I need a new laptop this year, so definitely before December. I can wait till November however, I can also purchase now. I am looking for exactly the segment of W520 – 15 inches, and performance centered. What can change if I wait those ~ 6 months in the context of this little beauty was just released and some markets like Singapore will only get it in 1 -2 months if I am not mistaken.

Should I wait at all? I tend to by my main companion machinery once in 3 - 4 years (now it is Dell Latitude E6400, while there is a Mac book pro and few desktops around). Yes I have a lot of PCs around but it is my favorite machine that I do all work on and some gaming.

Well we know that Intel will not release ivy bridge until 2012. So during this 6 months wait period there is probably no major new notebook designs coming out. Some tweaking, maybe some new sandy bridge processors from Intel, but nothing new. So if you think about this aspect, you can get it now or in six months, it doesn't really matter.

However, since the new ThinkPads are fairly new, I would still suggest you may want to wait a little. Especially since you are not in a hurry. The reason behind this is that prices will probably go down after a while. So in the summer or early autumn you might already get some good deals on a W520.

Sounds logical, and time runs fast, so best option is to wait to around October? I know sometimes when a new video card is released say new ATI FireGL a model of a notebook released originally with Nvida or just older card without any chassis updates or anything is also becomes available with that new cards, I think Dell did it with Precision line a year ago. So this also may happen? Or thre is no more Mobility FireGL? I got a bit lost :)

If you need computer buy it. But W520 prices won't go downhill but you might get freebies like free FHD or 500GB HDD, Intel 6300 wifi or RAID one HDD free etc...

but prices of W510 never went down that much neither W520 was very expensive. so pick what works for you.

If you're going to wait for all of 2011 then another month or two won't hurt until Ivy Bridge comes out. The only other thing that you'll see in the mobile workstation space is competitors from Dell's Precision and HP's EliteBook lines show up. I also believe the nVidia Quadro 5010M for 17.3" notebooks will be out in June. Beyond that there aren't any new pieces of technology slated to be introduced in the next few months.
