    Hi All,

I'm thinking of moving up from my T43 to an R61 this week, and I was thinking of getting an R61 with XP rather than Vista to avoid the blue screen problems. I was wondering if getting an R61 loaded with XP was less likely to have these issues. I usually don't mind spending some time tuning up a laptop, but I am currently studying for the bar and I will need to use this machine pretty much out of the box. I can't really afford to spend house doing clean installs.

Any thoughts on the R61 with XP, or suggestions for another machine?

There isn't any reason an R61 couldn't run XP, unless it has hardware for which there are no drivers. So if it ships with XP you're golden, it'll run like a champ. My only suggestion is to look at the T61. There is an incredible deal on them right now, I think they're trying to close them out. Around $700 will get you a nice one, check the deals section.

OK here's the deal I found, it's not all that great after all. You need to use PayPal to save 10% and it only comes with SUSE Linux. Check out Tech Bargains if you already have an XP license you can throw on it.

Greg, thanks for the thoughts. However, I am short on time and I was looking at getting one from Newegg, which has them in stock. I can't wait the two weeks for them to ship. I will check this other site you mention, too.

I ordered by 14.1" R61 in Feb, with XP. It runs great... probably more reliably than Vista I suspect. Be not afraid.

drjohn, If you don't mind, can I ask how much you paid? I'm thinking of grabbing one for about $750.

I don't actually remember, but I think it was about $830 delivered, back at the beginning of Feb. For comparison purposes, my R61 is the 14.1" widescreen model, T8100 Penryn processor, 2GB ram, integrated x3100 graphics, 6-cell battery, media card reader, Windows XP-pro, 2 yrs depot warranty, but no camera or fingerprint reader. I think that's right \_Q_/

So if I'm right, you have a very good deal at $750.

Same here. I ordered with XP in March from Lenovo website and am VERY happy. Only thing is that the service pack 3 update is giving me a hard time with the defrag. I hope Microsoft didn't do some shady thing in this latest update to make XP less desirable to entice people to go to Vista. LOL :D

I bought the SLED R61 since I refuse to pay additional Redmond tax.
Ordered 6-10, on my doorstep 6-16.

I locally bought another larger hard-drive and simply followed the XP install sticky. No problems yet.

Leosv, would you recommend holding off on SP3?
