What cables do I need to get the best possible connection between a new HDTV and my advanced mini-dock? DVI to HDMI for video and something else for audio?

thanks for any help with this!!!

    What ThinkPad do you have?

It depends on your TV/audio setup what you can do for this. If you have HDMI on your TV you can get a DVI to HDMI cable and attach it to the dock like a secondary display. You won't get audio through to your TV, though.

My TV has a 3.5mm headphone jack for passing audio through. If yours has one you can just plug the headphone cable in and tweak your TV's settings to get it to run whenever your PC's HDMI source is selected. Since I use a home theater receiver, I use a headphone to RCA splitter, and connected the audio feed to the CD source; works like a charm and sounds fantastic.

Thanks for the info! I think I'll try that with the 3.5mm headphone jack for audio.

I have a T400 that I got several years ago. I'm guessing it was the last thinkpad without HDMI since I remember at that point Dell was just starting to add HDMI. Luckily I have the advanced mini dock though so I hope I can avoid VGA and just do DVI to HDMI.

I've looked around a little more since my initial post though and am a little worried. It seems some people are having issues getting any audio out of the 3.5mm jack when DVI-HDMI is connected using the dock.

I'm using the same dock to attach my T500 to external monitors and an audio setup and haven't had any issues. To avoid them I would suggest getting an actual cable that has an HDMI output at one end and DVI at the other; it'll lack the audio channel cables on the HDMI end if I'm not mistaken. If you want, I'll test my dock and T500 with my TV in this manner, although I'm not at home so it might be a while.

Edit: I still have my T400(I'm selling it to a friend who had his laptop stolen in college) so I'll test it as well. I've got discrete GPU on both models, though; I have to use the ATI on the T500 to get any digital video outputs to work(the DVI on the dock as well as the onboard Displayport).
