This is related to this thread ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=62319) about the T60 model I'm looking to purchase.

The only T60 model available here in the Philippines (195123A) comes only with 256MB of memory. One of the stores I asked said I can only add another memory module up to 1GB which would then give me 1.256GB of memory max. When I personally went to another store to check on the T60, the salesperson said they can put 2 512MB of memory (although he doesn't look like he's sure of what he's talking about), which I like better so I can have a dual channel config.
Now, I don't know which one I should believe.
The Thinkpad T60 Series Service and Troubleshooting Guide (39t9389.pdf from here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/s...vm&operatingsystemind=49979&machineind=290545) seems to say that I can only add a single memory module. This illustration here ( http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-62741) also shows a single memory module.
Did I understood it correctly? Does the 256MB memory that comes with this particular model of T60 not replaceable?
To anyone who owns T60 and who upgraded their memory, or anyone who can shed me some light here, please help me understand how this memory upgrade works..

Can I replace the 256MB built-in with 512MB and add another 512MB to get 1GB, or can I not, which leaves me with no option but get 1 1GB module to get 1.256GB (no dual channel config)?

It shows adding one memory module because one slot is already full with the 256mb stick. Yes, it is removable, they just don't show it, its located in the same location as the second slot, right under the palm rest.

The important thing is to get more memory. Dual channel onlu offers a slight performance increase.

hmmm... so, you think it would be better if I leave the 256MB stick in it's slot, then get a 1GB memory for the vacant one? That would give me 1.256GB. I think it would also be cheaper at that, than get 2 512MB. 2x1GB would be too expensive and unnecessary for now.

I would go for 1.256GB for now and upgrade the 256mb later on if needed.

One some of my laptops with 512x2, I didn't notice any big improvement over a laptop with 1GB x 1 setup.

    :)

    You get 1.25GB of RAM.

    Since 1GB = 1024MB then 256MB = 1/4 of a GB (or .25 of a GB). Therefore, a 1GB stick and a 256MB stick equals 1.25GB of RAM. :D

And, yes, that would be a better option. You'll only really notice dual channel in benchmarks, etc.

correct me if i am wrong...
i think the 256 ram that comes with the notebook is NOT REPLACEABLE. so if u get 1.25 gb, u will be pretty much doomed with 1.25gb.
again, that is just my past experince, it may be outdated.

Thanks smith. I'm poor in mathematics. I agree, there's a big difference between 1.256GB and 1.25GB. whew! ;)
    @seanlee
Please check this picture from ZaZ review of the Z61m (Please note that replacing memory of Z61m and T60 are the same): http://www.notebookreview.com/assets/12917.jpg
You can see two memory sticks below the mouse buttons when you remove the palm rest. Theoretically you can put 2x2GB DDR2 sticks in there but 32bit limits you to max of 3GB even if you have a total of 4GB. So, if you can find 2x1.512GB :)D) stick you can have the max memory of the T60. But I'm not sure if you can find one now, so can really only have a max of 2GB memory. So don't worry, I won't be stuck with 1.25GB of memory. I can always buy another 1GB DDR2 later and replace the 256MB. Then I'll have 2GB.
Like what you can see from the thread title, I was confused too at first because of some pictures and references I saw in Lenovo site. But the picture I saw in ZaZ review of the Z61m cleared up my confusions. Funny, I read that review many times and didn't even noticed the two DDR2 sticks in that picture.

Of course you can replace the 256MB stick.
