I've been Googling and looking at quite a few threads at this forum but something still confuses me about the recovery discs. I figure I'm misunderstanding something since I can't seem to wrap my head around some things.
Basically, I've made a set of Product Recovery discs which consists of 1 CD (Start Recovery) and 2 DVDs (Product Recovery Disc 1 & 2) and figured that I was good to go for an install of XP Home with the intention of dual booting it with Vista Home Premium. Things didn't work as planned so I wanted to restore the notebook back to the factory settings.
However, during the Rescue and Recovery process, it was asking for an Operating System Recovery Disc. This is where my confusion comes in:
1) Is this OSRD the same as a Vista install disc or was this something that was supposed to be created through the Product Recovery application? Or some other Lenovo application? Or some Vista backup thing?
2) Is the OS Recovery disc necessary for a successful restore? I hit No to continue with the restoring but after it went through all getting all the stuff it needed to from the Product Recovery discs and rebooted, it was stuck looping at the black and white boot-up screen as it couldn't locate something -- it was looking for Broadcomm something or rather. I'm not sure if it was trying to find a local area network, the driver, or the card??? I even excluded the option to boot from the network in the BIOS but it still did the loop.
For what it's worth, I didn't touch the other 2 partitions; I only formatted the Windows Vista partition for my XP install. I can't see the system(? -- forgot what it was called) one in XP but I do see the Lenovo one with all swtools, FactoryRecovery, preboot, and recovery directories.
I know my life would be easier if I would just forget about turning the G530 into the default Vista machine with the mounds of pre-loaded software intact but I don't mind that OS and would like to use it as the primary system and unfortunately, I don't own a retail or OEM copy of Vista for a clean install. (I'll move onto Windows 7 when it's released. )
Edit: Just tried something with the notebook again and realized that it was looking for a SET of Operating System Recovery Discs. Guess I'll give Lenovo a ring and see if I could get those. :/ (Still wondering where the heck you get the option to create them though.)
Confused over G530 recovery discs
