I am looking at a Lenovo T60, and this is the optical drive:

Optical device: 4X Max DVD Recordable ATAPI Ultrabay Slim drive (Standard)

Does ultrabay slim drive mean the optical device is not on the notebook, but on some sort of dock? Does the T60 not have an optical drive built in to the machine? The pictures seem to show one.

I am confused, any help would be appreciated.

The optical drive is not part of the machine, per se. It slides into and out of the machine's modular bay. The modular bay can hold either this optical drive, or a hard drive, or use a second battery.

It's internal. As Skibunny explains above, the bay accommodates a variety of devices. It's a great Thinkpad feature. The battery let's you work longer unplugged, or you can slip in the optical, or another drive for more storage. They all hot swap.
