Configuring a Thinkpad with the smaller (3 or 4 cell) battery instead of the stick-out 6 cell one?

I don't like and need the extra bulk of the usual 6 cell batteries you can only chose when ordering a ThinkPad nowadays (or most notebooks). Why do companies design - by default - laptops with these ugly stick out batteries? It's beyond my imagination.

I usually use it wired and it's nicer to transport too when lighter, slimmer. Battery usually is for emergency only. (By the way is it any use to keep the battery in the machine for safety/surge protection purposes? Or it has nothing to do with it - the power brick does that job - in case of plugged in of course.)

So any chance or store where I can configure a ThinkPad with the smaller - 3 or 4 cell - battery? Because I can buy them in Lenovo's Accessories store on their site but I don't need the 6 cell one, thanks.

You could try calling and seeing if they will let you include a smaller battery. Asking in Lenovo chat would get you the answer quicker than calling probably
