    Hi everybody.

While playing Colin MRale Rally 2005 or Need for Speed, my computer (T61) shutsdown. Any idea what is happening here?

    Thanks for your feed-back.

Was it working before hand? Also, do you have up to date drivers? And do you notice it getting hot?

Nothing special before hand (i.e. messenger). Yes, it gets hot. Drivers are up to date. Thanks.

It might be overheating and shutting itself off as a precaution to damaging itself

So, I can not play these kind of games on my computer or is there a solution for this problem? Thanks.

You need to find something to either cool it, like maybe a laptop cooling pad, or increase the air under/behind it. But thats only if its overheating

There are many reasons for it to shutdown during gaming, but first and foremost you should clean out the unit for dust and such. Debris can really hamper the effectiveness of a cooling system.

I would expect the T61p should be fine for some gaming without overheating, maybe there's a defect with your unit?

If you have RAM installed in both DIMM slots of your T61p, and are using an NVIDIA graphics solution, you might want to check out this thread at Lenovo Forums: LINK.

On page 34 you will find this comment from a Lenovo representative regarding the issue:

    All,

We do understand the issue. There is a resolution in sight, and I'd ask you to bear with us a bit longer as it has not been officially released or communicated throughout the business.

No, we will not "cripple" the machine in any way.

No, it is not a thermal problem.

The observation on underclocking is interesting, but not directly related to the issue. I can see how underclocking reduces some demands on the system, but is not part of the resolution.

    Chanchin,

Does your machine use 2 dimms of RAM? If so, try taking out one of the sticks of RAM.

If the issue goes away then you might have the issue that BigPlaya linked to.

Have you played games on it before and this issue just started or is this the first time you tried a game?

By the way the T61p is a good gaming machine. Not sure about the game you have, but it can play some new games pretty well!

    Hey there,

I've been having the exact same issue. When I play COD4 the computer either freezes or shuts down without any warning. Extremely annoying it is :(

a good test would be to install Rightmark CPU utility. I use it for undervolting my CPU but it also has a great logging feature that will tell you anything you want to know about your CPU. It has crash logging in conjunction with heat, voltage, throttle, usage among others.

    Here's a link.

    good luck

I remember I had an issue when I was playing Oblivion on my T61 w/ 140M. It would BSOD on me out of random. I figured out the culprit was because of the Sonic DLA feature for the optical drive. Have you guys unchecked this in your optical drive properties?

    It's not an important feature.

Chanchin, is it a T61p or T61? That "p" in the name makes a big difference.

Anyways, the T61p is widely known to have this kind of problems and this topic was mentioned already a couple of times on this forums, and is also a hot issue on the Lenovo forums. Lenovo is working on a solution, supposedly they've already found one, but it took them ages and now it takes them ages to implement it so that new machines don't have the problem. What you'll need to do is go seek technical assistance from Lenovo - most likely it will be a motherboard replacement.

Is a T61, 4GB RAM. Curiously yesterday night I was gaming again and no sudden shutdowns. I thing this is a temperature issue. Compared with previous days when this machine shutdown, yesterday I did not remark elevated temperature underneath.
