megaprawn, same issue here with BF3. It seems like the performance is worse than it was before I updated the drivers, too...

I used FurMark for the GPU and IntelBurnTest for the CPU.

I used them both at the same time to test maximum heat generation.

As for stability and temperatures under "normal" conditions, I played Bioshock2 for a couple hours.

getting same issues as a few of you with bf3 in terms of crashing to desktop using the stock lenovo drivers. anyone have success using leshcats drivers? I hear the 12.2 UP5 is the best set to use, but dont wanna bother installing if it wont make a difference...so annoying as i bought the computer to play battlefield

Hi Imppy, leshcats (from what ive read) are designed specifically for ATI/Intel switchable graphics, and people have used them on the 470p so I dont think it should be a problem. I just dont know if theyll work - I dont really want to risk installing a 3rd party driver if there is no potential for upside (stopping the bf3 crashing)

from what ive read the most stable set is the 12.2 update 5 from Leshcat. Considering just backing up my system with OneKey and giving it a try...just a note....I know megaprawn mentioned he tried the newer versions and it didnt stop the crashing

kind of regretting this purchase as i didnt realize what a headache it would be to play a game....

doesnt work - waste of time...tried all the steps to install those leshcat drivers, and they ended up not showing up in the package - system didnt recognzie it. gotta restore factory partition and start from scratch...ugh

guess no way to get bf3 to work until lenovo updates the drivers (by the way, the ati drivers listed on the site are from mid-2011 (even though the upload date is April 16th....what a joke)

I spoke to Leshcat. He suggested that y470p users:

    1) use new YUC to ( Yad's UnifL Cleaner Section) to clean factory drivers
    2) install 12.3 UP2 drivers ( Catalyst 12.3 UP2 UnifL for Hybrid Graphics) as per instructions in his faq/guide (note: ensuring to use the 2559 Intel drivers, not the newer ones)

I have not tried this as of yet, as I wont have the time to do this over the next few days. Give it a try and let me know if it works for you..

should be able to - just run YUC to clean the drivers and then reinstall the lenovo drivers. can also create a windows restore point if you are worried to roll back to

imppy...just checked the leshcat forums this morning. apparently a few others tried the 12.3up2 and were unsuccessful at installing on the 470p, so dont bother...we probably will need to wait for lesh to update the pack

    Hey Imppy,

Been actually speaking to Lesh over the past few days. He now realizes there is an issue with his drivers not recognizing the y470p ati card. He said he is going to work on a fix for it (not sure how long it may be though). will keep you posted

update: So I spoke with Lesh yesterday, and he gave me a patch to apply to the 12.3 UP2 drivers...and it worked! His pack installed the newest drivers for ATi and Intel (verified by GPU-Z) and both cards were recognized correctly. However, the pack did not install Catalyst Control Center for some reason, and therefore I was unable to switch from the Intel card to the ATi card to test out performance/stability. Ive left Lesh a message but his site is down now so I cant check it out.

imp, let me know what he says in response to your ticket...i imagine hell have you try out the patch as well

"Q. ”I’ve installed everything, everything went smooth, but my CCC does not appear when i try to launch it. It does not give me an error, just does not start. What should i do now?”

    A. Its rare and unpleasant bug when moving from one one set to another. You can beat it like this:

    1. Go to Windows “Program and Features”

2.Launch “Ati uninstaller”. Select ONLY CCC for uninstallation. Uninstall it. Do not reboot.

    3. Launch respective UnifL unpacked set. Check ONLY CCC checkbox and install it again.

    4. Reboot after this procedure. CCC should be now operational."

I've managed to minimize my crashing during BF3 games. After uninstalling, cleaning, redownloading, and reinstalling the Lenovo graphics drivers, I was able to overclock my card! It crashes whenever it hits 60 degrees C. So, I take the clocks back down to like 780/950 and turn the scheme to windows basic. Turning off Windows Aero reduces the crashing.

What's sweet though is I can use my graphics card at 799/999 and turn up the anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering up in Skyrim and stay at 30~ FPS.

Imppy try to use Phixion's Driver Sweeper after you uninstall and you should be okay.

I sometimes have crushes with skyrim, is that the same reason? and why did you go 799/999 and not 800/1000. was 800/100 causing you to crash too?

I have a y470 but the thing that stopped my crashes was upgrading to 8gb ram...BF3 is a system and memory hog (almost 2gb used by BF3 and window 7 needs at least 2gb (at least for me) and 8gb ram upgrade completely erased my crashes (in my case, at least)...i run BF3 over 3 hours at a time with no crashes and it has been like that since I got the ram from amazon three months ago..

No crashing, just set it at that just for giggles. If I didn't believe in my warranty, I would redo the thermal compound, but that's not an option. I just need to find a way to petition Lenovo or AMD to get better drivers for our platform.

Skyrim for me never crashes because of the video card, only because of a mis-installed mod that causes a CTD. Unlike Battlefield 3 where it will just lock up.

Anyone able to verify if any of Leshcats drivers are working yet? I'm about to try it out.

    Hey guys,

So as I mentioned Ive been going back and forth testing patches with Lesh to get the update working. The newest drivers were able to install, however CCC was not (I've tried installing Lenovo CCC on top, adding and removing, etc) and nothing worked. Lesh posted a link for me to try a new version of 12.3 that he worked on specifically for the 470p but I have not tried it as of yet as Im out of town on business and dont have access to my 470p. Unfortunetly, his site is down right now, so I cant post the link for you, but when its up ill post it and you guys can give it a try (not sure if it will work on not)

edit 1: (Lesh's message and link for me):
    ---
Here is a test package based on Intel 2622. With proper fixing of CCC for your model I hope and fixed backlight, but this needs to be confirmed. Id like to warn you that this is a test package and it might work with bugs of any sort. But still worth trying out

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/31772527/Cat_12.3_2622_t1.exe
    ---

I would advise if any of you try to create a restore point first with windows, as I had been adding and removing his test drivers (and adding and removing the lenovo drivers) and at some point my system would not reinstall the Lenovos so I had to format as I hadnt made a restore point before testing (used the One Key Recovery).

if anyone tries, keep us posted....

edit 2: ive also been reading about another guy who mods drivers - named 'DNA' drivers. not sure if anyone has looked into these either.

and to answer your previous question, this was supposed to be a revised patch that fixed the issue i had with getting CCC installed (I hadnt tried this one). did the driver at least install for you?

I heard the DNA drivers work, but I'm not willing to test it out because if something goes wrong, I don't have the resources to do a reformat.

Alright It's been a few days since that last post. Battlefield 3 No longer crashes as often as it did. I suspected it to be a combination of HEAT and the GAME itself. I got a laptop cooler (cooler master x-slim) and the game lasted longer before crashing randomly. After the patch on 6/5/2012 I was surprised and got a few hours worth of gameplay (with the cooler) with only two crashes, as opposed to every time I fired up the game. It crashed once when I was loading and alt+tabbed out and once when I heard the onboard fan speed up. This IS with windows aero turned off/windows basic on.

Now I don't know if any other games crash like BF3 did where it says "the AMD driver has crashed blah blah blah" But it hasn't crashed as much since the last patch!

I bought a y470p off the Lenovo Outlet site. I had difficulty installing the updated drivers, especially the CCC off Lenovo's site, but my main issue was the headphone buzzing. I'm disappointed considering that the Z570 that I had also purchased from the Outlet a month prior is in pristine condition with no sound issues. I sent the laptop back for repair and indicated that something for the grounding needed to be done. I'll report back if they're able to do anything with it. I don't know how people can live with it stock (I suppose it's partially my fault...I often have earbuds on with nothing actually playing, so it is very bothersome).

The Intel/AMD drivers from Lenovo. I wouldn't say alright, I'd say okay. It still crashes on me. I have to play in the coldest room in my house for it to work for a decent amount of time.

For me, BF3 still crashes a lot. Every 1 - 30 minutes. About 20% of the crashes occur while the game is loading.

What kind of GPU temps are you guys getting while playing? I think my max is around 66C for the GPU and 80C for the CPU.

Damn! That's really hot. While I'm playing my GPU maxes at around 62 C while my CPU is at 70 C. Do you live in a hot area or something? Might wanna call Lenovo support to send it back in for heat issues. Some members here have even gotten laptops without any thermal compound.

Hmm... maybe I should take a look inside and see if I should reapply thermal paste. My room temperature isn't too hot, it's usually around 68 - 70F.

Also, does anyone know how to remove the Optical Drive? I want to replace it with a HDD caddy so I can put my SSD in the Sata III port and the HDD in the 2nd caddy. I've removed all possible screws that could be holding the Optical Drive in place, but it still won't budge. I could try pulling harder but I don't want to break it.

Edit: Got it out. There was one more screw on the inside that was holding it in place. Now I need to find a HDD caddy that will fit. Anyone know what height is good for a HDD caddy for the 470p?

Lesh just released a new version of his drivers:

Catalyst 12.6 WHQL UnifL for Hybrid Graphics

if you search the comments, it seems it works for the 470p (search for 470p) and there are few people talking about it. no time to test it especially if it messes up my system, but its there if anyone wants to try
