Does anyone have any good pictures of the interior or a repair manual for this laptop yet?

I've tried googling but haven't found anything. I'm interested in seeing if there is a spare mPCIe slot and if there is any space for modifying the cooling setup.

:D I am an owner. I'm just not about to tear my notebook apart...

About the WEI Scores
[IMG]
on the 7690m
It went away after a few days for me. I accidentally statically discharged into it and it went away, but don't go looking for ways to shock your laptop lol. I also switched my USB mouse and keyboard to the other ports and it went away. If I use my gumy earbuds I heard it, but using my JVC HARX-700's I don't hear it, and I tried my buddy's AKG Q701's and I didn't hear it either.

I still haven't got my SSD yet. I'll take pics when I do install it sometime in the near future.

Mine has always been fine; I have no unexpected or unwanted noise.

I didn't realize I was lucky, but apparently I was.

I wonder if the headphone brand - hence jack & maybe shielding - makes a difference? I'm using mine with Bose earplugs.

That's higher than mine on aero. Maybe the settings of when to use the GPU? I'm told that 5.8 is about as good as you can do with a spinning hard drive.

Aha, so maybe brand -- and hence jack & shielding -- does make a difference? I've only used mine with Bose earplugs.

Thanks! I think a lot of folks here will be really interested.

I have some static on mines as well, but it is barely noticeable. Anyone else a little annoyed/embarrassed about the slight purplish tint of the keyboard area.

Here is my WE scores with a 128 gb mydigitalssd

I just plugged in a pair of cheap earbuds (motorola, from my cellphone) and no static, no problem.
very happy with everything about the notebook, except the switchable graphics. I have opted to just keep it on 7690 all the time. and since I am plugged in most of the time, not a problem.
WE scores are the same as Riou, except data transfer is 5.9 with stock hard drive.
Riou, installation of SSD went smooth?
I am guessing you would recommend to users of this notebook.

I would recommend the 128 gb mydigitalssd for anyone looking for an msata SSD with a good amount of space. I've seen of complaints on this forum about the performance of the 64 gb version from the same company, but I've only seen good reviews for the 128 gb version. The price was also great compared to other 128 gb msata ssds.

The installation went smooth for me outside of having to download the drivers from the lenovo site after clean installing windows, which was my fault for formatting the 750 gb (and I think the partition containing the drivers) drive with no driver cds. Just installed it in the small in the bottom right of the notebook and it was detected with no problems.

Riou, thanks for the input on the mSATA SSD. I will be doing this installation myself.

To anyone else: what's the best way to install an mSATA SSD, transfer your windows installation over to it, and keep all of the Lenovo drivers on the machine without formatting the HDD (destroying the drivers) once Windows is installed on the mSATA SSD? <-- confusing, I know, but this will really help.

Thanks for input all; I've never done this before.

I consistently see about 5 hours 15 minutes with the i7 and intel gpu on and the screen brightness set to three ticks. That is with light web browsing and music playing through the headphones. I am extremely pleased with the battery life. Add me to the list of people that is very happy with their purchase.

That is interesting. I was thinking about swapping the 5400 hdd for a 7200. I know wei isn't always super reliable, but the work may not be worth the performance gain?

Also interested in the best procedure here. Would love to improve on the 5400 hdd they put in there. Im a noob when it comes to this too.

It is not all about the RPM of the drive, you want to look more at the cache size and look into the read/write speeds of the drive. A 7200 RPM drive usually isn't standard in a notebook because it takes more energy to spin at that speed. The difference in speed in a traditional HDD would probably not be extremely noticeable, but hey... you do what you want to do :D

My Y470p has a Seagate ST950032AS HDD with an 8MB cache and is not too shabby. I'm not too worried about the reliability of it, as Seagate gives vendors their not crappy drives.

On a similar note, have any owners of the Y470p run any benchmarks or tests on the HDD--maybe any CrystalDiskMark or HD Tune? I'd be curious to hear about your results. :)

Guys I'm tripping. Just got my "Y470p" in the mail. NOWHERE on it does it have the 'p' after the Y470 but it has the i7 2670M, the 8GB of RAM, proper HDD, AND the Radeon HD 7690M.

Did I get some franken-laptop? On bottom left side of screen and the bottom near the windows sticker it says Y470. There is no P to be found anywhere.

Anyone else have this?

Hey guys I am planning to get a 470p pretty soon, have been doing some research on them and I thinks its something that I am looking for. I currently have Asus G60Vx and the main reason I am getting a new laptop is because it starts overheating if I start playing games. So I was wondering how the 470p is the heat sector? And many of of you who put a SSD in it did you take out the stock hard drive?

From some of the posts in this thread (here's an example: http://forum.notebookreview.com/8295772-post33.html), temperture control seems to be very solid. Looks like it runs pretty cool, even under load.

As for the SSD, I think there was at least one mention in the thread of swapping out the HDD for an SSD, but I think most of the mentions have been inserting an mSATA SSD and keeping the stock HDD for storage.

My y470p has a Hitachi drive. Would Lenovo use two different drives in the same model laptop?
How would I check what the cache size is on that drive?

Anyone's y470p not have the "p" badging anywhere on the laptop? It also says manufacturing date was 12/03/2009.... all hardware internals are correct for the "P" though.

Try going to Start-->Accessories-->System Tools-->System Information. At least on my Vaio, that gives me lots of information about the system configuration, including the full model number. Hopefully that will list y470p for you...

I asked Lenovo today what kind of drive they put in the y470p, and they said they couldn't tell me because they use so many different manufacturers. I figured it was a bs statement, but maybe not...

As for cache size, I don't have the program, but I've seen on other forums that the utility DiskCheckup can tell you your cache size: PassMark DiskCheckup - SMART hard drive monitoring utility.

JP$, please advise what badging is on your Y470p? Bottom left part of screen says Y470 or Y470p? Bottom of laptop says model is Y470 or Y470p?

thanks guys just trying to figure this out before i put too much work in getting this laptop setup or if i got a franken-laptop that has the internals of the Y470p in the body of a Y470. I am concerned because whenever I sell the laptop when I'm through with it....

I'm sorry...I don't have mine yet. I can let you know once I get it, if you decide to keep yours that long. I should get mine next week hopefully. I would contact Lenovo before you decide to return it and ask if what you are seeing is normal. If the hardware is all in order, then you are probably okay, but I understand about the issue that could arise when trying to sell it later...

true that. i wish someone else would chime in that already has theirs. i am going to contact the lady who sold it to me over the phone tomorrow and see what's up. i've noticed there is a lot of flex in this keyboard also.

anyways, thanks for the help. i will advise my findings tomorrow. i would imagine somewhere on this machine would read Y470 with a "P".

until next time....

This question has been addressed on the Lenovo forum/;
See Message 7 on this thread by Cleo
Wrong Product Shipped - Lenovo Community

It seems that the ONLY difference in a Y470p, and a Y470 is the AMD Radeon Graphics card in the Y470p. Everything else in the machine is the same as the Y470. If you got a AMD Radeon Graphic card as your GPU, you got a Y470p. No other "branding" as P will be visible.

The y470p is from the y470 family of laptops, so I was not worried when it did not say 'p'. The model is 0855 and if that is what yours says and all the specs are correct you are ok.

The only strange part is the mfg. date. Mine is Jan 13, 2012. This is a brand new model, so I am surprised to see 2009 on it.

Also, check the modified date of the two folders in the Lenovo "D:" partition. Mine match the mfg. date.

thanks guys I will look into it. Do y'all have any keyboard flex? Mine is minimal but if there's a chance of me getting a unit with no flex by sending it back I would probably jump at it.

I'll be making a thread later strictly about the mSATA installation & driver process-- haven't installed it myself yet but will add the info for those who are interested.

I couldn't make head or tail out of that thread -- including listing of drivers that has Nvidia but no ATI/AMD -- but I do know this:

Mine says Y470. No "p". This includes the bottom of the case, model type.

But it definitely has all the stuff listed on the web site as Y470p: 8GB ram, i7, yadda yadda, and most definitely shipped with the ATI/AMD Radeon HD 7690M. That's what shows up in Device Manager, and that's what all the personalize / options software has plastered all over it.

This freaked me out, too, when I first saw it. But it's OK. Lenovo simply messed up in something on the labelling or branding, but not on the system itself. Thankfully.

Keyboard flex? I'm not even sure what that means. The whole main body would have to bend for that to happen, wouldn't it? At any event, I don't have any.

What I do have is a small amount of horizontal give on each individual key. If I put a finger on a key, not depressing it, and wiggle the finger around horizontally in a circle, there's a tiny amount of give, back and forth, in the key. This varies by key; some have more, others less, in no case other than a very very tiny amount.

This bothers me not one little bit. I probably wouldn't ever have noticed it except that your post made me wonder what "keyboard flex" might be, and I tried that.

i define keyboard flex is you depress a key with a hefty amount of force you can actually see, and barely feel, the actually plastic keyboard bending under the pressure. it's not THAT noticeable but definitely comes into play in my mind when addressing build quality.

other than that, i am very happy with this laptop so far. just need to find a used copy of starcraft ii and get diablo iii when it comes out :]

just placed my order for the mSATA 128gb drive so i will be making a separate post on that for everyone once i receive and install it (hopefully) successfully.

I noticed on Lenovo's support site that there is no Y470p option to choose from in order to select drivers to download. This confused me as the Y470 driver menu has a Nvidia driver, as you mentioned. Lenovo assured me that the support staff could help with finding drivers for a Y470p system. I would assume all the drivers for the Y470 apply to the Y470p, except for the graphics driver.

Looking very forward to it! Add lots of detail! ;)

hey guys, i downloaded batman arkham asylum for $10 on Impulse and i have been trying to play it. i see a video on youtube of someone with a 7690m playing the game with almost all settings maxed AMD Radeon HD 7690m - Batman: Arkham Asylum 1080p - YouTube but on my y470p with the same setup and even less resolution i can't even get the game to play on medium settings at 30fps.

anyone got any tips on how i can ensure the card is running at full speed or to force the card to be in use at all times? in catalyst control center it is telling me that the game is supposed to run on "High Performance". i'm not sure why i'm getting such low fps?

EDIT: ok, i just put the resolution to 1280x720 and now it runs very well on Very High settings, 45+ fps!

Not all of them. BIOS and chipset software updates are not the same.

ALSO. The Y470p was supposed to be an overwrite of the original Y470, as they planned to discontinue it, but it was very popular so they have a bunch of supplies for it. The "p" was never meant to be a newer model per se, but just a denotation of a different version. It's like not saying a BMW M3 isn't a 3 Series because it doesn't have 3xx digits.

I was going to say "mine doesn't do that" and then I looked closely when pushing on 'j' very hard.

Yes, I can see flex when pressing abnormally hard. Just barely, but it's visible.

No, I can't feel it, especially when using it normally.

Now, maybe were I really pounding on a game or a very angry email...

Definitely looking forward to it!

You might want to check this out:

Processors — Intel® Turbo Boost Technology Monitor overview

It's a small tool from Intel that shows your clock speed varying as you do stuff -- AKA "Intel Turbo Boost."

Mine, on the i7, seems pretty binary: So low it's nearly shut off (like when I'm typing here) or up at 2.2GHz when something wants to consume computrons, like rendering a web page or running a game.

More than anything else, it's a demo that the clock varying tech actually does do something. Like, probably, keep it cool. And save battery. Amusing to watch. Not truly useful. But who does this stuff to be useful?

Note that right-click on it gives you a choice of sizes. That wasn't clear to me at first, and the big fat graph is, well, too fat for me.

guys, thanks for the input & responses. i think the keyboard flex is more exaggerated near the top (at least on mine it's around the W and S keys).

another observation: i originally thought my laptop was made on 12-03-09 (looked like December 2009) but upon further thought i realized that the Chinese use a different date format than my American self. i have surmised that it must've been made on 2012-MARCH-09 (i put in the order on the 7th).

anyways, this thing seems to be a great bang for the buck. haven't experienced any cooling issues at all so far.

as far as the mSATA install, i will take pictures and show some detailed steps. this will be a huge learning process for me so all of you noobs, fear not, i will take all of the risks here. just got confirmation e-mail that it shipped out today so hopefully a walkthrough can be posted this week.

one question: what's the best way to make a backup disk for Windows? through Windows itself or through one of those pre-loaded programs? i'm yet to do this and i want to make sure i do it right.

Hi all. I joined this board years ago when I was researching my first laptop - ended up going with a T43. It's still kicking with all its original parts, besides a replacement fan. BUT...I am now typing to you on my new Y470p.

In case anyone is still fighting with static/interference in their headphones, try this fix I found on Lenovo's forums:

1. Go to your Realtek Audio Manager. If you haven't messed with your taskbar too much, there's an icon there.

2. You need headphones plugged in for this step. On the right side of the window, right click on the green symbol under "Analog" and select "Connector Retasking."

3. Select "Line Out."

My headphone buzzing disappeared instantly when I selected this. Clearly the computer drives this jack differently depending on this setting. I haven't looked into the true reasons for this, but unless I notice poor sound quality in some other area, I will keep this as my setting. Hope this helps someone.

EDIT: The static came back sometime around the time I was messing with the audio manager in order to write this post. I hope you all are grateful! It's worse if I set the output to "headphones." But before it was absolutely gone...very curious. Note that I've noticed the static on 2 different pairs of headphones, both nice ones. So I don't think that's a big factor.

I'm still tweaking my new computer, no msata SSD planned just yet. Not sure if I'll be a regular visitor here, but you may see me around. Happy to help where I can...but some of you are more capable with computers than me. Cheers!

Just read this post in the y470 owner's lounge. May be helpful for migrating windows during your msata ssd install. It's Post 2648 in the thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ide...0-official-owners-thread-265.html#post8389205

This might be helpful to those seeking more battery life -
I am getting 6ish hours of battery life by setting the maximum processor speed to 50% on the advanced power settings for Energy Star.
And so far I haven't seen any real hit on performance. It's quite great!
