Aren't Ivy Bridge laptops coming out in couple of months?

Nice to see they're still using the awful 1366x768 screen still....

Yeah, they are coming out soon and Lenovo is refreshing their Ideapads model line. Y480 will stick to 1366x768 as well unfortunately. Personally for me that is an appropriate resolution for a 14" screen, however someone else might find it lacking. Only 15 inch Y580 will get a Full HD upgrade.

There are still a few months to go waiting for April releases. Therefore, if Y470p is released before then, it would grasp an even stronger role of a portable gaming solution, getting closer to M14x in graphics power while maintaining lighter weight. I'm just excited at upgraded graphics more than anything :)

Looks to be same everything, maybe just newer SB processors and the 7690M which is just a 100MHz faster 6770M which is better than the 550m for sure. Not bad.

The Y470P is now on their site, but besides a higher price, I see no spec difference.

Hmmm, yeah... "Multimedia magic with AMD graphics" GT 550M. Lenovo is trolling us, lets hope it's a mistake.

I am sure it is a mistake. I bought my brother an E420 when they first came out and they listed the screen res as 1600x900...I was pissed when I found out it was a 1366x768. Thankfully they upgraded the RAM and HDD for free because of that.

This looks to be just a Y470 with AMD 7690m, nothing else has changed.

I prefer the 550, since much better switch function with Optimus. Still, this system is more expensive than the Y470 with same specs plus Blu ray.

I'll seriously try to remember to post my experience here or over in the owner's forum after it arrives.

It says on the site now "Estimated ship date: 2/10/12**", did you get that ship date sent via email and did you see this same 2/10 during checkout? That's an incredibly long time to wait. Daffodils will be pushing up by then.

**Ship date: An estimated ship date will be posted on our order status site after your order is placed. The date reflected above does not determine when your order will ship since inventory status may change before your order is final and because items may be held until all products on the order are ready to ship. To obtain the latest information about the availability of a specific part number, please call the phone number listed in the masthead at the top of this page. A flat charge for shipping & handling may apply for certain orders, as indicated on the Checkout page.

I read that and refused to believe Lenovo would bait an order with a date 2 weeks out and then after you order actually show you a date that's 7 weeks out. Inventory may change before your order is final, lol, let's see how long it takes them to update that 2/10 ship date with one more realistic.

I ordered one last night. It told me the ship date was going to be 2/15/12, which honestly is far too long, as I need it ASAP for school. I was thinking about cancelling the order, but your ship notification is giving me a glimmer of hope. I'm still on the fence about this laptop though, as 900 could get me a laptop with far better battery life (something that's fairly important for me). Yet, the specs of the Y470p are just so tempting. I wish they let us fully customize the laptop (read: pick a different screen), as apparently the 14" screen isn't that great. I also have no desire for a 750GB harddrive.

Laptop came in on thursday night. Installed mass effect 2 and skyrim, skyrim getting 30-40fps during fights on high settings. Masseffect ran very smooth as well, absolutely no hiccups. Are there any specific benchmark requests?

The Y470/Y470p has a 62Whr 6-cell battery which is near the top end for battery capacity. If you optimize your configuration and use the iGPU then it should get battery life comparable to other 6-cell battery systems. There is however no 9-cell option. So you'd need a 2nd 6-cell and do a hibernate, swap battery, resume process to extend your battery life.

Another way of getting better battery life is to wait for the 22nm Ivy Bridge-equipped Y480. Should be out in 4 months or so.

If you do need a 9-cell, more portability yet still have gaming, consider a business grade notebook with expresscard and 9-cell battery options. Eg: 12" Lenovo X220/HP 2560P/Asus B23E, 13" Toshiba R830/Dell E6320, 14" Lenovo E420,T420/Dell E6420,Vostro 3450/HP 8460P + ~$200 GTX460-768MB DIY eGPU via expresscard slot. Such a configuration will give you a more durable notebook, a business warranty and will outbench the Y470p's HD7690M. Some of those systems can be user-upgraded to i7-quad too. Dell Outlet having particular sharp pricing on their systems during sales.

    See sig links if interested.

That looks pretty good, my GT 550M got 1172 in stock, someone else got 1200 with i7-2670QM in stock. So about 15% improvement over stock GT 550M in DirectX11. Thanks a lot for your work, would also love to see Vantage and 3dMark06. I got Vantage P4697 3DMarks and 3DMark06 9411 Marks on stock.

Could you also just link to the score in the future? Could you run a program called HWMonitor during the benchmark and see how hot the GPU gets during the tests?

weird.. i ran gpu-z again, and the specs changed a bit. now it says there is 128bit bus width, but for some reason, 100 mhz core clock/150 mhz memory... that doesnt seem right

I guess it's mostly due to the fact that the GPU is relatively new and GPU-Z must have trouble recognizing some parameters. I wouldn't worry about it too much as long as it performs properly. I'm hoping to get other benchmarks in order to get a good comparison to the 7690M in HP Envy15 and 7690M XT in the HP DV6 models.

Looks great again, assuming that is stock performance, it's almost 17% improvement over GT 550M.

Generic VGA video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2670QM Processor,Hewlett-Packard 1688 score: P6152 3DMarks That's HP Envy 15 score, so we can probably confirm that Y470P has very similar performance.

So one thing we can say for sure, it's that Y470P offers 15-20% improvement on stock clocks over Y470. Now it would be nice to find out 3dMark06, temperatures and overclock limits, if you don't mind doing all of that work for the community Bomino. You've already done us all a great service, so if you'd just like to enjoy your new toy instead of running a bunch of tests, then no problem :)

Wow, that external graphics looks very interesting. It won't work for me though, as I carry my laptop around campus for school and work. I really wanted the Lenovo T420, but I couldn't justify the higher price for lower spec'd system (and no dedicated graphics). I'll just have to live with the Y470p; it sounds like a great system in all other aspects. 5 hours of battery life would be perfect for me, but I can live with ~4 hours. Laptop should be arriving very soon; I am pretty excited. I haven't owned a laptop (well, I have a netbook, but it sees limited use) in at least 8 years.

3Dmark06 results This score doesnt seem like much to boast about.

I also re-ran 3Dmark11 to see how the temps were. according to GPU-z logs, the gpu never went above 50*C! most of the time stayed around 48. (note, I always have my laptop on a hard, flat surface). really good temps if the software is accurate. when performing normal [non-intensive] tasks, GPU hangs around at 35*C

the 7690m in the y470p may not be overclockable?

both core clock and memory clock are at max, even though they are at factory settings. Is this me or the laptop? i have never overclocked a notebook before.

bingo. doing this solved the problem

alright, I overclocked, just to mess around a little, to 825/1000 and noticed an instant 5 fps gain in skyrim. awesome. tomorrow i'll do some benches, but do you guys think i should keep it there or bump the clocks a bit? i was only on skyrim for 5 minutes, but temps didnt go above 55.

You can bench until you get artifacts, then downclock a bit for stability. For example, on Y470 I can only overclock at 900/1000 with stable performance in games, but I can bench further than that. Is your max 800/1000 in Afterburner for core/memory? 55C sounds extremely good. While overlocking my GPU temps go up to 72C and CPU to 80C without notebook cooler, which is also not shabby.

You can do both stock and overclocked. I would just do 3dmark06, Vantage and 11, since we all can compare to that.

alright fellas, here's a roundup of all the benchmarks i have done so far.

Stock scores are when GPU clocks are at:
    725mhz core clock
    900mhz memory clock

O/C scores are when GPU clocks are at:
    800mhz core clock
    1000mhz memory clock
(I found these clocks to be the most stable.)

    Stock 3dmark11 - 1360
    O/C 3dmark11 - 1484

    Stock 3dmark Vantage - 5707
    O/C 3dmark Vantage - 6343

    Stock 3dmark06 - 9493
    O/C 3dmark06 - 10334

And here is a pic of the temps while running all 3 O/C benchmarks according to HWmoniter

I got notice a few minutes ago from Lenovo that part or all of my order had shipped, and I should check status page to see what's up. That I did, and found that the status page shows no change: ship date of 3/12 for everything.

So who knows, maybe something shipped. They seem intent on making me guess. :-(

I'm really glad to hear that some folks here have gotten theirs; it reassures me that it's not all a fantasy.

BTW, and speaking of fantasy: Benchmarks are great and all, but has anybody played Skyrim on it yet?

This damn Y470P is driving me insane. I received it today about 6 hours ago and it has been a nightmare. I just came out of a horrible experience with Acer, I thought Lenovo would be better but I was wrong.

I switched the power plan to high performance, manually switched the card to high performance (click configure switchable graphics) (7690m). And neither 3dmark06/11 or Vantage test the 7690m. I'm wondering if Lenovo even put a dedicated graphics card in this laptop at all. Is there a way to check it without opening this damn piece of trash?

by this do you mean that you went in to CCC, went to "switchable graphics method" under the "Power" box, and clicked on "select the graphics processor manually or based on power source"?
