Let me start off by saying that I take extremely good care of my things, especially my laptop. I have a ~1-month old W510 and I just noticed today that the matte coating on the LCD lid is wearing off on all four corners.
Is this common? I don't bump or ding my computer, just put it in my case when I go to and from work.
I had high hopes for Lenovo, but am starting to become quite disappointed with their quality between this and the dead pixel in the middle of the screen.

This is common - the matte coating does tend to wear off at the corners, where they always rub against other surfaces. I too wish the finish was more durable than it is (I'm rather OCD about keeping my computer spotless), but yes, it happens.

I haven't noticed this wear on the older thinkpads.

This happened on my T410 too.....
-
T61 has the same issue. Mine at least....
-
Happened on my dad's T60 as well - like I said, it's a common and persistent issue.
-
matte rubberised finish does wear off, it is just a matter of time.

This happens on most thinkpads in the corners and edge of the lid area if you put it in contact and situations that warrant such ware (backpack/brief case).
It is a coating. Bound to happen. That being said I have had very good experiences with the outercoating as far as scratch resistance goes. I dragged my laptop on a desk (upside down) and there was a tiny rock or something and it dug into the lid coating. I can't really tell where it is as it didn't get down to the metal.
Coating on lid wearing off?
