Actually my SSD is coming in today, and I will be doing a clean install. I am not exactly sure which drivers you'd want from Lenovo. I know the Intel graphics you want from them so that the OSD works. You'd want their Energy management software. You probably need their camera driver, the USB 3.0 driver. Many of the drivers have updates from the manufacturer.

In my opinion, I would only do a clean install if absolutely necessary. I haven't seen a compelling reason to do a clean install so far (at least for me). Installing to a new SSD might be one though.

Yea I love clean installs since I know what I put on it and I know how to tweak it for fastest boot times/quickest performance. I don't like have millions of processes running that are not necessary.

    Black Viper's

I use his Tweaked settings. I have 50-some processes. So much better than before.

I would not recommend a clean install with a Y570. Many users including me have run clean installs and the laptop ends up with hardware failure. It seems a clean install is linked to this. Lenovo customer support is absolute hell and you will be out of a laptop for a very long time. I am currently going on 4 months without a working laptop and multiple returns to the depot. If I ever get a working laptop again, I will absolutely not do a clean install. And this is such a sham of engineering that a laptop seems to not be capable of running properly on anything but the OM's image.

Hey man, I understand your pain, but try to keep it to one thread (the bashing, that is). Also, clean installs, since you have done them on multiple machines since you are an IT guy, are not the cause for hardware failure. I've been on my machine since December with a couple clean installs and not once have I had an issue. You just got a defective unit. It sucks that it is such a hassle for you, but I am sure in the end it will work out. I had a great experience with customer support from Lenovo, so it goes both ways.

You are wrong. This post specifically pertains to the question. There are a lot of people in the owners threads with messed up laptops and all of us have put clean installs on our machines. So tell me, how exactly are you able to construe my post as bashing?

The problem is most likely something to do with Optimus. I don't think a clean install is allowing the video card to get the correct voltages because over time the video card dies. Many, many, many Optimus laptops have this problem and Nvidia has said f#$k you to their customers. It appears they are dropping support as their forum is LOADED with this type of issue. The problem is, Lenovo used this crap in their laptops, so they are still liable to get it to work.

I wouldn't expect you to research this problem and know what the facts are, but in the future, I would stop making false assertions without first knowing the facts. My advice. Absolutely do not do a fresh install. That will save you the time it takes to wade through 500 pages of posts to see how much a problem a fresh install is on the Y570.

Dude you need to calm down. Maybe I am misinformed. Could you please point out where you see these issues? I would love to research this so that I am better prepared for the seemingly inevitable.

There are a lot of people who have successfully done a clean install of Windows on their Y570. They're just too busy playing Skyrim to answer.

However, I still suggest not doing a clean install unless absolutely necessary. And that's because the Y570 is a different kind of animal (I've said that before somewhere); it doesn't act like other computers, especially if you have RapidDrive.

I don't think the Lenovo Windows is all that bad. The bloatware is manageable, and there isn't really too much other "special" background processes running. On any other computer I'd do a clean install of Windows, but I didn't find it necessary on the Y570.

I know because I am one of them. I have a wonderful install and my machine flies. I am extremely impressed with it.
