Is it possible for me to get a clean install of Windows XP Pro, without the IBM software and other factory applications, from the Rescue and Recovery CDs (from the RnR partition). Can I get the normal Windows XP install application? The old blue so I can get rid of the rescue partition while i'm at it?

You'll need the actual WinXP CD in order to do that.

The reason I ask is that I'd like to use the product key on the sticker on the bottom of the machine but I've been informed that that only works with the RnR CD's

If you can get a XP CD, Microsoft will probably validate it for you, but don't expect to get it from them. They will expect you to buy a new copy. Lenovo doesn't give out OEM CDs.

You can do that, if there's a 'i386' directory in in root of your C: drive. [Ex: C:\i386]
Basically, you can use this folder to make a clean WinXP install CD/DVD without all that crap your ThinkPad was shipped with.

What sets the ThinkPad apart from all Non-ThinkPads are the ThinkVantage stuff they ship it with. The only crap on it is windows and nothing can be done about it. IBM makes no hassle and lets you smoothly uninstall all the thinkvantage drivers they have put on it.
