    Hi guys,

I want to clean the air vent at the left side of my T400. But I don't know if this involves removing the fan?

Has anyone ever done this? Please give me some ideas. Thank you very much.

    Hi,
There are various ways of doing this.

Either blow some canned air through the vent, but do so carefully!
I do blow my laptops on a weekly basis., if you were to do it for the 1st time after say a year's usage you risk making it worse.
Reason is the dust gets clogged in the vents so blowing it might push it in the fan and that is no good!
ALternatively, if you feel you can do this, open up the lappie, not that hard, really, you should then have an opened access to the fan from above, making blowing the dust away much easier.
You can find a pdf here or on Lenovo's site with detailed instructions on how to open it up!

    Hope this helps!

just blow canned air right in there with computer off.

the T400 vents dont really gather much dust though. almost nonexistent actually when compared to the dust gathered in my old dell.

This could result the damage to the fan, if the fan is spinning fast in the wrong direction. NOT recommended.

Yep. If you do use compressed air, you should ideally be using it when the fan is secured (prevented from rotating), so it does not exceed the design specs. Alternatively, you could try using very short, controlled bursts of air, which shouldn't damage the fan.
