use microfibre cloth and some LCD cleaning solution that you can buy from computer stores, or just some face toners/cleansers (i.e. Clean and Clear)

I use a baby wipe followed by moist toilet paper and then blow on the screen to make sure there are no streaks. Just as effective as any $25 cleaner.

That's what I would recommend as well. I generally avoid using any cleaners, though, and just use my microfiber cloths dry. If that doesn't work, you can try using a bit of water if you do not have cleaning solution (which, incidentally, you can get for free from some optometrists, depending on how nice you are and how nice they are ;)).

saline solution is not a good solvent, and if the solution gets into your LCD brackets it will corrode your metal frames and electronics, so it is not advisable that you use any solution that have salts in it.

Here are Lenovo's instructions (link is unfortunately down at the moment).

And here are Samsung's (copied here in case they change the link):

"It is recommended that the product surface be cleaned [if] it is dirty by using IPA (Isoprophyl Alcohol) or Hexane. Keytone type material (Acetone), Ethyl or Methyl chloride must not be used as they can cause damage to the Polarizer."

From personal experience, I would recommend NOT using Walmart No-Glare Lens Cleaner. :p And pressing only VERY GENTLY against the screen, especially near its edges.

So for me, from now on: 50/50 isopropyl alcohol / distilled water mix in atomizer. Spray that lightly on microfiber cloth. Then very gently rub the screen with moistened cloth.

Just use a damp (with lukewarm tap water) part of a piece of soft cotton cloth. Use gentle strokes from top of the screen downwards. Dry the same way, with a dry section of the same piece of cloth. You shouldn't need to do anything more, unless a major stain -in which case look to specialist LCD-screen cleaners.

I bough cleaning solution, microfiber cloth, and a piece of fabric that lies on your keyboard when the notebook is closed, all from www.shaggymac.com

Then I lost the cleaning spray, and the microfiber cloth, that was 2 years ago. Haven't cleaned my screen since. It is pretty dirty too.

I managed to keep the piece of cloth that rests over the keyboard. It's great, stops from the keys from scratching the screen.

I use a damp paper towel as well. I've had a T20, T40, R60, and now a T400s... I've never had any problems with this and it does a good job.

Is there any benefit to using special solutions and microfiber cloths?

Microfiber cloths are softer than the plastic screen surface, and tend to pick up dirt and grease rather than just smearing them around. A solution of 50/50 distilled water and isopropyl alcohol will dissolve some contaminants without damaging your screen.

In contrast: wood fibers in paper towels can scratch the plastic screen surface. And tap water usually contains minerals that can leave deposits and/or scratch your screen.
