So I'm finally set to receive my Y580 after waiting for about five weeks! I got the
20994NU model which means it has a 1TB HDD + 32GB SSD. I was able to get hold of a regular SSD for a great price around Black Friday so my plan is to replace the HDD with that. However, having never done a clean install before I want to be absolutely sure I'm doing this right.

starfly's wonderful guide here is very informative though it seems it's specific to doing a clean install on an mSSD and keeping the partitions on the HDD. I also found link626's really great guide for restoring OKR here (I assume Option B is the best course for my situation). So in the interest of thoroughness, and because I'm nervous about the process since I've never done a clean install of an OS (plus the new SSD and OKR stuff), I just wanted to sort of combine the guides in a step by step and ask if I'm doing anything wrong or forgetting anything.

    So here it is:

    1. Make sure to backup the drivers on the Lenovo partition.

    2. Run 'RapidTool.exe' located on the Lenovo partition in the 'drivers\RapidDrive\Tools\' folder.

    3. Turn off notebook, open bottom cover by removing the two screws and sliding out the cover.

    4. Remove HDD.

    5. Install new SSD.

    6. Put back the bottom cover by sliding it back in and replacing the two screws.

(Question: Just to confirm, I don’t need to do anything BIOS related here, right? Or do I?)

    7. Insert and boot from the updated OKR7 setup disc.

    8. After booting from disc, you see OKR installation options. Choose option 1. (Install OKR Clean Partition). Follow the instructions, choose how big your C drive should be, and let it finish making LENOVO_PART partition and installing OKR. It will create a 14gb LENOVO_PART.

(Question: Do I restart again before installing Windows? I assume another step here would be to remove the OKR7 setup disc and insert the Windows 7 installation disk? Sorry if that’s a stupid question.)

    9. When the Lenovo logo screen re-appears, press F12 to go into boot selection menu.

    10. Make the appropriate selection and the system should boot into Windows setup.

    11. When you get to the screen where you have to choose on which drive to install Windows, you should see the SSD you plugged in.

    12. Choose the SSD disk to install Windows in.

    13. Follow the onscreen instructions to get you through the Windows setup process.

    14. After Windows is finished installing, it's time to install all the drivers from the Lenovo partition (or wherever you backed up the drivers). This link should help you with which order to install the drivers in: Y580 Driver Install Guide

    15. Turn off pc, then press the novo button to boot into recovery. It should automatically start backing up your OS to create the 'initial' image.

Is there anything wrong in all of that or anything missing? Is there any point where I might get tripped up? Sorry if it looks like I'm overthinking this; like I said, just trying to be thorough. Thank you for any help!

One Key Recovery 7 does not work with Windows 8. So the OS you're planning on installing should be Windows 7 or earlier. Otherwise just skip OKR for now until OKR8 becomes available for download. Which is what I've done with my shiny new Y500.

Actually, when I bought the laptop from Lenovo I was a bit skeptical about whether I would prefer Windows 8 or not, so I got one of the last Windows 7 machines before they all switched to Windows 8. :)
