Is there going to be a refresh of Thinkpads incorporating Clarksfield before the end of the year? Before the holiday season perhaps?

Why release at January, that's just after Christmas.
Clarksfield is october, no reason to wait.

I doubt there will be any thinkpads using Clarksfield (maybe W710, but that's all), since it's a high performance branch that would be very unpractical on most thinkpad (power consumption too high, too hot).

Next-gen thinkpads will have Arrandale CPUs, coming Q1 20 10.

This will give you more information:

    as sefk said before
the lenovo roadmap points to new thinkpads in q1 2010 using the arrandale CPUs, not clarksfield

Oh well, if it's W710, then it's probably March 2010 (or February).

Even if they start selling in Jan, I doubt you will get your laptop in your hands til Mar (if you're lucky, Feb).
