    Hello all!

I've just bought a T60, and I would like to change the installed HDD with 5400rpm with a new 7200rpm...

My question to you guys is:

Will the thinkvantage and the other ibm/lenovo stuff be transfered if i use a clone program? or is it installed in the ibm hardware somewhere else?

Thanks for you help! If you would reply to my email ([email protected]) with the subject "t60 hdd"

    /emn

You can download all drivers software from the lenovo site.

    Just use the recovery discs.

    Here's a dumb question...

Will the HD contents be preserved when you use a recovery disk? Will your programs and data remain?

The recover disc wipes everything. Of course if the drive is new that won't matter.

This is not what I wanted to hear.

My game plan is to use Acronis to set up a 160 GB drive in an external case. Acronis will write the MBR to the new drive but the MBR disappears off of the original drive so I will only have 1 bootable drive. The asumption is that everything on the original drive (hidden sectors, recovery files etc) gets migrated to the new drive. I can then pur the newdrive in the laptop and move the old drive to the external case. I think that I will need Acronis 9 for a serial ATA drive. Is there a way to restore the MBR on the original drive in the external case without harming the drive contents?

Hmmmm, I just ordered Acronis True Image 10 and a 2.5" SATA external enclosure so I can remove my 7200rpm 100GB Thinkpad drive (sata) from my new system and clone it. I'm going to store away the cloned drive and put the original drive back in the system.

I guess I too am wondering if Acronis will make a perfect clone of the drive, hidden partition and all to the target drive.

It does. It copies EVERYTHING. I have it for my T60 WS. If the HDD is a different size than the origional, it can resize the partitions to be of the same ratio I think.

Acronis rocks. Hitachi uses a version of Acronis EZ Gig II software in their Notebook HDD transfer kits (comes with USB enclosure, HDD, and software). True Image Home 10 is very fast, easy, and efficient ;) I love it. My T60 WS takes about 20 min to create the image and 20 min to restore from the image. ;)

Uh...I think that EZ Gig is a Apricorn product. No relation to Acronis.

I have used both and they both work as advertised.

    Acronis is less expensive

    FWIW

    Newegg has WD1600BEVS 9.5mm 160GB 8MB cache perpendicular recording on sale for $104.99 w/appx $5 shipping.

If you go the paypal route and use Paypal10 as a promo code, the shipping goes away.

I really surprised by the current draw on these HD's..500ma in use, 400ma idle
Will have to be more aggressive in setting standby mode

For those who are interested (and even for those who are not)....

I did the deed last night....I now have a 160GB WD Scorpio in my Z61m

I used the EZ-Gig II upgrade package from Apricorn. Turned off my Predesktop area and security chip and moved the original drive to the external enclosure. Put the new drive in the laptop. Ran the EZ-Gig software in the automatic clone mode. Found that the Old Preload C went from 111.86GB to 143.1 GB. Also the Servicev0001 partition FAT 32 partition (how many of you knew that you had one of these?) went from appx 4 to 5 GB. I also had 4GB of unassigned space.

When I originally ran EZ Gig the unassigned space showed up as a red partition and the clone failed (1:30 this morning). Tried it again when I got out of bed and the unassigned partition was green. Ran the clone program and it worked fine. Took about an hour to clone 80Gb of data. I then disconnected external (original) HD and rebooted the computer. Everything is working fine but I have not yet tried to do a backup. After the clone, I restored the Predesktop area and the security chip so that both were active. I guess that we can call it a success.

Before doing the HD upgrade, I upgraded drivers/bios/etc at the Lenovo site. Looks like the old tvt_gina problem has been remedied. I also had to install the new fingerprint reader software by hand. Everything else went fine.

BTW, before doing the upgrade I tried to run R&R on the internal HD. It failed because I did not hve enough space. Will try it again. If there is still a problem, I will start another thread.

I am required to log a certain amount of Professional Development Hours for my day job. I think that my doing the upgrade was of singular educational value and I should be able to count the hours. wonder if I could get the board to agree???
