Download and print the appropriate section of Hardware Maintenance Manual here:

It's actually fairly easy, thermal gel is the most important thing. A tech screwed up on it and my laptop was turning itself off randomly.
I couldn't find a definite answer if the chipset on T61p supports 8gb of RAM. Intel info on Santa Rosa mentioned 8g limit so perhaps you could max the ram if you do have 64-bit system.
Otherwise T61p is on par with its succesor W500 (unless you prefer ATI Card) and at the moment T61p has better graphics driver with openGL 3.0 support. Other option is W700 but it is a totally different computer - bigger and better and three times as expensive =) -

What do you use your laptop for? This plays a big part in what or if you should upgrade anything. Getting a good SSD to replace your hard-drive might be a good choice.

I'm someone who pays a lot of attention to performance and I dont care what it costs. That's a limiting philosophy for Notebooks that are changing their basal technology every couple of years. When I was running a t91p. I put a t9600 (2.8 - 2,93 mhz (Imprecision mine)). You can if you want. Note the tempertures. The t61p was sold with this basal technology at one time.

You might want to consider upgrading to a SSD. That's where's you'll get the best bang for the buck, though the SATA controller on the T61 limits the throughput to 150mbps. You won't be able to use the really fast SSDs like the X25-M to their full potential.

I would recommend buying a desktop lolz

My w500 is very fast. dd3 and T9600 are very good performance.

anyway....
to the OP,
again i ask, what do you use your computer for?
in all cases, i think if you want to upgrade, the W500 is the best bet from lenovo. the 15" model can disipate heat better than the 14".
if you dont need much portability, then W700 would be the most powerful notebook from lenovo. maxed out, its got; performance, weight and price that brings tears to most consumer's eye . -

I agree with Wobble, you're system is already pretty powerful. An SSD will make a it a bit snappier. If you are gaming or taxing your graphics card get a gaming system with a nvidia 9800 or something.

Lenovo doesn't make a 4:3 notebook anymore so there is nothing comparable in Lenovo's line unless you want to go to widescreen.

CPU-wise, you have little to gain by getting a new Thinkpad. However, GPU-wise you have a lot to gain.
You are getting some incorrect advice in this thread as your nVidia FX570-M (if you have the nVidia FX570M) is a crippled version of the FX570-M in the 15.4" T61P widescreen models. The FX570-M in the 15.4" widescreen models achieves roughly the double 3DMark score at 1280x1024 (compared to yours) and is on par with the new ATI card in the T500 model. -
