This is my first post. I have learned a great deal from this message board the last few months before ordering my T500 and wanted to alert those of you who may be interested in Lenovo's SSD sale.

Lenovo recently started a promotion in which the price of the SSD option is dropped to $249 from $599. Before ordering, I called Lenovo to inquire about the SSD specs and was given a part number that was for a Samsung SLC SSD.

I received the T500 today and was greatly disappointed to see that I was mislead and that the SSD is a MLC version (much cheaper to buy, slower, and with one-half the MTBF compared to the SLC version).

The exact SSD model installed in the T500 shipped to me is: Samsung MMCRE64G8MPP-0VA.

This is my first laptop purchase from Lenovo and I would appreciate any advice as to how to return it without incurring a restocking fee or, perhaps, return only the SSD for a credit.

Wow...that sucks. Thank you for letting others know. You would have to call Lenovo and see. Your final recourse would be your credit card company of course. Unfortunately, while the part or model is not specifically listed...lenovo is not necessarily doing anything "wrong" since they just say a 64gig ssd. But I see your return is valid because you called them and asked for the part number and such.

Would you mind running Crystal Diskbench on your MLC-drive and posting the results.

Yeah I agree that if you actually phoned beforehand and asked about which part number you would receive then you should seek recourse with Lenovo. I'd just phone them up and explain the situation. I'll bet they will make it right.

Thanks for leting the rest of us know - and I'd suggest changing the thread title if possible so that it is more of an informative bulletin/warning than a rant. That will help more people avoid the same disappointment for the current SSD sale.

That would be something more appropriate for googling.

But to break it down real world an SLC has a longer life than a MLC and generally has better random performance.

Thank you for the prompt reply. I did. How do I figure out if my SSD is a SLC-type or MLC-type?

    Thank you.

Checking the part number. Lenovo doesn't give out SLCs anymore as far as I know.

This is why I always get the cheapest hard drive option, and then replace with my own drive. I can get better performance at a cheaper price.

And in the case of SSD, I can pick a winner like the Intel X-25 Gen 2, instead of the chicken dinner ones.
