Hi guys, I was just wondering something. I'm Canadian, and I don't want to pay stupid Canadian Duty taxes, so I need to buy a laptop from Canada. Does anybody know where I could buy either a) a Thinkpad T61p that I can customize somewhat, or b) a fully loaded Thinkpad T61p. I found a T61p on Lenevo's Canadian website, but it only had a 100gb 5400rmp hard drive. That sucks. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

ps do Thinkpad T61p's make decent gaming machines? :D

Wrong forum? This is Asus, and your looking for ThinkPad.

And yes, the T61p would do just fine as a gaming machine, since its using an 8600GT GPU, except with workstation optimized drivers. :)

An option is to go with the 100GB hard drive from the factory, and then buy a 160GB 7200RPM or 250GB 5400RPM drive from NCIX and install it yourself. Its probably cheaper than having Lenovo upgrade the hard drive as well.

Spoke to a Customer Service Rep about T61 14" standard screens and asked about customization of laptops. He told me that they are "scheduled" to have customization available in November of this year, but as he told me, it was originally supposed to be in October. Essentially he told me to not hold my breath waiting for customization as it could take long than expected.

Sorry, I didn't quite answer your question, but I figured I'd give you the heads up about what should be in the pipeline for us Canadians.

I don't understand...I've heard from different people who talked to reps that it would be available sometimes

When I asked Lenovo, they told me that customization wasn't in their plans

I was also recently told by Lenovo that Canadians would have the option of custom-built systems by this fall.

As much as I want customization at Lenovo Canada. I don't see it happening soon. Especially with all the backorder, delays and such.

There is no duty on laptop from US to Canada. Tax is the only thing you have to pay so don't get confused with duty. There might also be a $5 service charge.

From what I understand you must pay duty and tax

That is technically incorrect. Lenovo notebooks are made in China and are subject to duty. NAFTA only excludes goods made in North America from duty.

However, in practice you may not be charged duty on the notebook since it was shipped from the USA. It is hit and miss (and more often missed). I have personally been charged duty on several purchases from the USA - but the value of these items was larger (>$1000) so I think that customs is more likely to assess duty in that case.

The brokerage fee ('service charge') is $5 if shipped by Canada Post regular mail and $8 if by expedited. The brokerage fees for both UPS and FedEx are insane - don't use them. If you lie about the value of the shipment the parcel can be confiscated.
