I would be getting the T510 w/NVidia, but the GPU looks so skimpy. Makes me think for long term value I should go W700, but then it's about to be refreshed in a few weeks, but I question whether it will finally have the i7 chips, anyone know?

Why not go for the W510? It has the latest Core i7 processors and a GPU that is much more powerful than the one in the T510.

Thanks for the suggestions. So what are the thoughts on the GPU in that laptop? Obviously not as powerful as the FX3800, but still respectable?

The other problem I see is that fully loaded and with NO discount (since it has none) it comes out almost the same as the fully loaded W700. I guess that premium is for the better Intel chip?

probably better getting the W series?
i just got t410 with nvidia which, i hope, would be sufficient for light openGL 3D visualization.

Truth is mine won't be that heavy, I just hate buying low-end for laptops because it's infrequent that I buy them. I guess the 880M would be more than enough. It's going to cream my current GFX 8800 desktop card w/756MB, right? If so then it should be fine. Can the 880M drive a 26" monitor easily, with some 3D viz going on?

The FX880M is not that powerful. Head over to notebookcheck.net to see some benchmarks for (rough) orientation.

    FX 880M (W510): http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_quadro_fx_880_m_us.html
    FX 3700M (W700): http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_quadro_fx_3700_m_us.html

while they're both 1GB, the bandwidth on the FX 3700M is twice as fast as the FX 880M (51.2 GB/sec vs. 25.6 GB/sec).   if the 3D vis you plan to do is static and not animated then the difference between these cards for your application is negligible at best.   keep in mind that any GPU can choke given the right rendering/visualization task, including two FX 5800s in SLI.   nothing is perfect. ;)

regarding long-term value, technology is changing so rapidly that it's impossible to say which system will last you longer.   if you're looking for a desktop replacement then i think either system would work as such.
