Not knowing anything about the switch, but are all the ports gigabit ports? Some switches have a couple of gigabit ports, and the rest are 10/100. Which version of the T61 and which OS? Those would be helpful in looking at also the other machine you are networking to does it have a gigbit port?

I did a diagnostic and i got this result:
The link partner is not capable of running
    at 1000 Mbps.
Could not connect at Adapter's maximum
speed because link partner does not support
    that speed.

Whats is the link partner ?

Check your cables. You need Cat 5e or 6 in order to do gigabit.

The other end of what you are connecting to.

Do you have the card set to 10/100 mode by chance? Or a CAT5 (not CAT5e or CAT6 cable)? I have a couple of gigabit switches, and my thinkpad will negotiate a 1000mbps connection when attached directly but not on another floor that I know the drop is CAT5 (non "e").
