I just realized I did not add the touchpad option to my X201 when I ordered it(Have not gotten it yet but it shipped). Is it possible to add this myself somehow? I am kind of freaking out right now, I did not realize you had to add this option.

Well I believe you would need something like this in that case: ebay link

If it makes you feel any better, I thought I'll die without the touchpad on X200... but trackpoint alone seems to work for me. It's certainly not comparable to a real mouse, but it terms of usability, I find it equally good (or bad if you're a pessimist) as a trackpoint. :) Or if you really want it, just don't open the box. I think the way it works (at least that's how it goes for Dell) is if you don't open the box and return it, you don't pay restocking fee. Then you can reorder the other configuration.

Would it void my warranty if I were to replace it with something like on that ebay link? Hopefully I will be okay with just the trackpoint.

I'm 99.999% sure (someone please correct me if I am wrong) it won't void the warranty, if you keep the old part and put it back if you're going to need repair. I mean.... it's just a piece of plastic + touchpad. It is supposed to say somewhere (duh.... don't feel like googling) that the palmrest is a user replaceable part. (Screen for example, is not.)

EDIT: Found this for other models: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-71461

Hmm maybe I will try calling up lenovo and seeing if I could buy the part from them.

Looks real easy to replace so I am not to worried about it. As long as it does not void my warranty ill do it.

Returning the machine will incur 15% restocking fee. The palmrest is considered customer replaceable part, so you wouldn't void the warranty if you change it.

Lenovo themselves won't stock the part, these parts are kept by IBM parts, so you would need to buy it from them.

Okay cool thanks. Not going to return it.

I guess I will try and get the part from IBM parts but it looks like you need the part #, is there any way I can get this somehow?

You can find the part no. In the x201 hardware manual (just google the x201 hmm).

Just wanted to give a little update.

The trackpad is pretty awesome, I love the scroll button and dont find it any harder to use than a touchpad. In fact I think I like it better. I am just going to stick with trackpoint only.

I told you! :) Btw, there isn't that much space to put anything but a very small touchpad on X200/X201 (due to the buttons that accompany trackpoint and take a bit of space). And the touchpad space is all the way near the edge... I don't think it would be too comfortable for me to use it.
