Hi all,
I opted for the solid state 120 gb HD when I bought my new T510. I'd like more storage, and don't want to lug an external HD. Can an additional internal HD be added?
Thanks,
Anna

Yes, you need to get the Ultrabay III hard drive adaptor. See Lenovo - Find accessories for your laptop and desktop - Storage - 43N3412

 Cool, eh?

BTW, whereas the optical drive is virtually always off, the second HDD will be another device that constantly draws battery power.

unless you spin it down when not in use. duh!

Up... down... up... down... up... down... Not really helpful, in practical reality.

My 500GB 7200rpm ultrabay drives stays spun down for hours at a time. Very practical for me.

Well, the idea is to put all the regularly-accessed programs and data on your main OS hard drive, and use the secondary HDD exclusively for data storage, so it can spin down and save power when not in use.

"Data storage" does not always mean long-term backup. If that was the case, I would just turn off the drive or pop out the ultrabay altogether. "Data" can actively mean data that is needed when applications are run to do certain jobs: from spreadsheets to virtual machines. If I put all my "regularly-accessed programs and data" on the main drive (usually C: ), I wouldn't actively need a secondary hard drive.

In my case, the W510 has a 160GB Intel X25m SSD drive in the primary bay, and a Hitachi 500GB 7200rpm drive in the ultrabay. OS, apps, and frequently accessed stuff is on the SSD. Occasionally accessed data is on the ultrabay.

This config certainly serves my needs and is nice and quiet (for a W510).
Can you add another internal HD to T510?
