I may consider a Refurb or Used Thinkpad

That consideration may depend on if I can upgrade the warranty.

Are the existing warranties transferable and can they be upgraded?

A lot of companies like Dell will let you. In fact Dell has let me upgrade OUT of warranty PC's (not sure if they still do today, but I have)

If the machine is from the Outlet, the answer is "NO". You can purchase a post-warranty service agreement, and pay with your kidney.

If it's just a used machine, bought here, on eBay or TPF, the answer is "it depends". The warranty can only be upgraded/extended once, on any ThinkPad.

As for transfer, the warranty follows the serial number, not the owner.
