Can someone explain to me the significance of the T61?

I checked on Lenovo's site. I honestly don't see what the rage is all about :X Can someone clear this up for me? I tried looking on their site and all I found was some gross 1.1k laptop with 512 ram, 80gig hd, and a bunch of stupid crap. Thanks :D

Newest Chipset (Santa Rosa), Core 2 Duo, and screaming speed for a laptop in performance.

It is also a thinkpad which are some of the best built, classiest looking, rugged machines out there :)

How is the speed so good unless you pay like 200 more to upgrade ram? Also, how are the video cards?

and can someone post a link to the specific one everyone is drooling over? Thanks.

Agreed, it is in a different class. It is not just about hardware but also build quality, ruggedness, and quality of the parts.

Once you Think(pad) you never go back :p

Can someone recommend the extras they added? And how is the video card in this?

Its ok, not the best but decent.

The Intel Integrated one is good enough to run Vista Aero and your basic stuff, the Nvidia is ok for *light* gaming.

Nothing hardcore really but it is a business notebook so not meant for gamers.

The thing is measuring laptop performance is kind of different from desktop.
with the same configuration, ram, cpu... different brands of laptops can still perform quite differently depends on how it build up... or some kind of the other technique..

Honestly, dell, especially inspiron, performs poorly relative to thinkpad. So if you want a computer with you at least 2 to 3 years but still performs well, go with thinkpad. I used to have a inspiron 600m. After a month I bought it, the letter "u" popped out from the keyboard... after another month, the letter "i" popped out... -_-||

The T61 is the first 14" widescreen laptop in the T series.

It'll also sell for more than the T60 when you go to sell it which is pretty much the only reason I want a T61 over a T60. Resale value is important to me since I upgrade every 2 years.

How can you possibly know? If it's crap, nobody will buy it. T60 is proven to be working well, that is not sure for T61.

Also remember it is new that the thinkpads are even close to the dells in price...when I was looking a few years back they were a $400 - $500 premium but for good reason, they are built better and last longer.

I just cannot stand these newer dells, the quality is just not up to par IMO.

That's what I used to think, but over the years I've owned several laptops from different manufacturers and I'm willing to pay a premium for durability, ergonomics, and getting a relatively clean system without a lot of cr@p preinstalled. My T61 on order will be replacing a 14 month old HP that is failing in multiple ways (hinge, screen, power connection outlet, ethernet connection slot). I also got a better price than on any other comparable made-to-order laptop.

With that said, the past is not always a predictor of the future, especially when considering the transition to one of America's finest corporations--sadly--to a Chinese company, but initial T61 reviews look solid.

It's essentially the same design. As someone else pointed out, the reviews thus far are solid. So it's safe to assume that the T61 will have a higher resale price. Beyond that, is the new Quadro cards with higher performance, magnesium lid rollcage, and run cooler and quieter. They also have brighter screens I think.

Can't do anything but to agree on what has been said regarding these durable ThinkPads. Though In my case I guess I've got a bias since I've been using ThinkPads on and off for the past 15 years, though I didn't get my very own one until 2 years ago.

Before that, due to echonomical reasons I went with a Fujitsu and HP. The Fujitsu, with 7 years on it actually still runs, as a ssh server in my basement. The CD rom's dead and the original HD's crashed. The HP...well...power plug broke free from the motherboard (common I've heard), the mousebuttons beneath the trackpad jams every now and then, Network speeds seldom reach more than 2MBytes/s (despite it being 100mbit). Sorry digressing.

Been working here in Japan and helped a good friend of mine to choose a normal user laptop. While he was interrested in ThinkPad's he wanted a range of good laptops to choose from so I set out and explored these Japanese models of the VAIO, NEC, HITACHI Prius (not the toyota...), SHARP, TOSHIBA, FujitsuFMV (had nothing but 4200rpm hd's) and Dells. (HP's aren't sold over counter here it would seem).

Maen, was I surprised. Right, while some of those brands beat the thinkpad hands down in a LCD screen fight, they fail in over all build quality feel and software usabillity. Some of those High end Core 2 Duo computers fellt down right slow and sleazy to use compared to my P755...I guess it was becuase of all those tutorials, bg anti virus-spyware checks, firewall, vista with it's aero glass, google desktop and whatnots. Ohh, and the keyboards simply can't compete IMHO.

Unless the quality of TP's changes drastically I will never switch from a TP....

Sorry, long post which has nada todo about the topic. Just fellt like writing.
