    I want to buy an older (but new inbox so I get the 1 year warranty) thinkpad for about $400.

    14 to 15.4 models.

    I'm not sure what you are looking for. You want a NIB Thinkpad with a warranty for $400? You could probably come close with a R61i. Anything older than the current generation is going to be pretty much impossible to find new with a warranty.
