    Hello all,

I recently tried to "Optimize" my notebook following the advice in this thread:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=5787

It seems that somehow I turned off a service or something, and now when I try to open the "My Computer" section in Windows after a fresh startup, the searching icon appears for about 1 minute before I can access all the different drives, etc in My Computer. But then it works fine until the next shutdown.

Is there a service that I accidentally turned off that could be causing this? Or is there any alternative way of fixing it? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Perhaps system restore will offer some assistance.

If you list which services are currently disabled one of us might spot the problem.

Here are the services currently disabled:
    Alerter
    Clipbook
    Error Reporting Service
    Help and Support
    Human Interface Device Access
    Messenger
    NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
    Network DDE
    Network DDE DSDM
    Routing and Remote Access
    Secondary Logon
    Shell Hardware Detection
    TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
    WebClient
    Windows Time

Hopefully something will stand out! If not, then I guess a system restore might be required, as ZaZ pointed out.

About half of the services you listed are aldready disabled by default. You might want to try setting Shell Hardware Detection and TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper to Automatic as they seem (to me at least) they might be the cause of your problem.

But seriously speaking, do you really think that disabling these "light" services can actually speed up your computer? When you've got more than 512Mb RAM, you actually start losing functionality (or worse) when you start beliving in these lets-disable-services-to-speed-up-windows propaganda. Sure, you need to know and be aware of what starts up with windows, and that defragmenting is anyday better than not defragmenting at all, but seriously, that "Dummy Guide" was written in 2004 when 512Mb RAM and 40Gb HDD was the norm on many notebooks. With most people having 1Gb or more in their notebooks today, and with dual core processors, you probably won't notice any improvement in boot-times or what-not just by disabling services which are actually rather useful. I used to be obsessed with reducing the number of processes/services/etc to the bare minimum, but now it's just not worth the time and effort needed to ensure that what you disable today will not prevent something else from working sometime down the road.

    //end rant

I enabled some services today, after playing around and I seem to have fixed the problem. I did enable the Shell hardware Detection, so that was probably what fixed it.

With regards to your rant, I guess you're more or less right about not needing to minimize services if you have 1gb or more of RAM. None the less, I still enjoy knowing that I've tried making my computer as efficient as possible. So far, I haven't run into any problems (besides this My Computer thing), and while the gain in performance might or might not be real, I still enjoy tweaking things.

That being said, you do make a good point, and since my tweaking caused this issue, perhaps I will be less inclined to do more tweaking in the future.

Either way, thanks for the help!
