I just bought a ThinkPad X24 (aka 2662-HH3).
It's a bit of a shock having a computer with no removable discs, floppy or optical.
I've got a USB thumbdrive. Can it boot from that? If so how do I format the drive?
(Eg to make a pseudo DOS-floppy boot, or a Knoppix CDROM ISO.)

It can boot from a USB hard drive so a USB stick might work too if you format it right. It is only USB 1.1 so it will be pretty slow.
Format the Stick with the HP tool to make a bootable USB stick and then put an image on it. Knoppix should work. -
Make sure your USB stick is less than 2gb, because you will have to format it with FAT16. If you have a 4gb stick for example, when you format it with FAT16, the drive will only be recognized as 2gb.

It is not possible. It will boot from a usb harddrive but not a thumb drive -

Try the HP utility by Googling: "HP Drive Key Boot Utility" and follow the instructions... it worked on my thinkpad x24 using a Kingston 2GB stick

at this moment, i am attempting to boot Ubuntu 7.04 from the same stick i only get a flashing dash bar on the top left of a black screen -
This thread in another forum has a lot of utilities and links:
USB Flash / USB Key / USB Memory Drive / SD-Card / Boot Utilities, USB Stick Bootability problem
Since most seem to require you reformat your USB key, I'll pick up a cheap one to play with.
The main use for me would be disaster recovery and perhaps running no-1802 should I upgrade the wifi card.
Can a ThinkPad X24 boot from a thumb drive?
