I just ordered T400 with Vista Basic because I already have windows XP pro and Vista ultimate CDs and want to use XP for my research.

Actually, after ordering T400, I tried to find XP drivers for T400 on Lenovo.com but have no success. There are only few diver files on Lenovo website. My T400 model is 2764CTO, but this is not listed yet.

Also I looked at the XP clean install guide in forum but it seems not for T400.

Please give me some advices to download all XP drivers or how to install XP without a problem.

    Thanks,

    DW

Thank you for good news~!!! I hope it will be updated soon.

It seems not fair if they do not offer all drivers for XP.

XP is fading out. I wouldn't be surprised if they quit making full XP driver sets, though I expect them to.

Vista is a good operating system.

This is my personal opinion of why Vista has such a bad rep; most consumers buy their computers from retail stores such as Best Buy, Walmart, Circuit City, etc. The problem with this is that the budget systems (desktop or notebook) that are on sale in these stores usually come with 512MB (sometimes 1GB) of RAM for a Vista machine, so right off the bat, the computer already runs slow as a snail. I believe that if the hardware specifications matched the recommend requirements Microsoft planned from the get-go, Vista wouldn't have such a bad rep.

Of course this isn't the only reason. There are also software/hardware incompatibilities.

I'm actually switching to Vista in a couple weeks.

When you configure it go with Vista 64bit and an option will appear for a free XP restore disc. :)

That is what I saw earlier today.

    If I didn't have an R61 I would jump on that T400/W400.

I actually want to try VISTA. I am not hating it.

But thing is.... I am a graduate student in Dept of Electrical Engineering and most our equipments have XP enviroment or even lower.

So if I use VISTA, there will be serious problem to get data from these equipments.

So I am really eager to have clean XP installation guide for T400.

    Thanks~!

How so? How are the data files different if viewed/processed on XP vs Vista?

Order the system with Vista Business with Windows XP Professional Downgrade or with Vista Business and select the Windows XP Professional US English Recovery DVD. In the latter instance, when you get system make the Vista recovery disks from the recovery partition, file them away, then use the XP disks to install XP.

    This isn't Rocket Science.... ;)

I think he means there are programs that are compatible with XP, but not with Vista, which is understandable.

Hating on Vista is the 'in' thing to do now.

I've been running Business 32 and Ultimate 64 for over a year now. Works great for me.

Yes, XP is fading, but so what. They (Lenovo) still provide drivers for Windows 2000 which is way too old. I think they should support newer Thinkpads hardware with the drivers needed to run on XP and 2000. Supposedly Thinkpads were business machines, and not so often on companies you would see an instant swap of Operating Systems. Older OS are reliable and many IT refuse to upgrade.

I'll be running XP pro on my T400 but only because I only got 1GB of ram on it. When the price of DDR3 ram drops, i'll switch to vista business

I had to go an get many of the drivers from the Japan website but I am definitely noticing a drop off in performance. I think the hardware might not be so compatible with XP

Thinking i might dual-boot Vista SP1 soon, but you shouldn't have to grab "japanese" drivers for XP Pro. I'm running XP Pro w/SP3 and found every single necessary driver for my T400 7417-CTO on Lenovos US site, without experiencing a performance hit. They've added a lot of new drivers and updates the last few weeks. I think an earlier post had compiled a list of drivers and, at the time, some were links to the japanese page, but all drivers can now be acquired directly from Lenovo's U.S. site. Are drivers different for other regions/countries? Hope that helps!

I got my T400 with the cheapest OS they would allow. The second I got it, I popped in my XP Pro CD and reformatted/repartitioned EVERYTHING. I didn't even wait for the battery to charge up to 100%.

As a student, I don't use my laptop for anything super complicated. I stare at the screen for about 7 hours a day, but it's 99.5% in MS Word, and Firefox.

Vista sounds like it's gaining more acceptance these days, especially if the Moderator who wrote the XP Clean Install Guide is switching. I think I'll wait for it to settle in a bit more.

XP SP3 just came out about 4 - 6 months ago and it's rock stable. Combine that with an "enhanced" setup of XP (ie removing unneeded services and tweaking) and you've got yourself one screaming fast T400. Top that with Vista!

I think that if you've got RAM, Vista is great. XP tends to cache too much on HD (at least my old desktop did but then I only had 512 MB). Vista uses physical memory for cache first, hd second. The eye candy does not hurt and so far the only time it crashed on me was when I played around with Ati2vexx process. The only downside is that it eats nearly a gig of RAM on its own.

Bravo! And to the NBR reviewer who said "Hating on Vista is the 'in' thing to do now", whether or not that is the case, I know a local trasportation company in my area which is very heavely dependent on advanced computerized GPS systems and it proved to be impractical to integrate Vista computers into thier system, it had nothing to do with a " Fad " mentality.
