I regret not buying the W500 model with the finger print scanner. I was wondering if I can just buy the top cover pieces and scanner for the W500? I looked but I could not find anywhere that sells parts.

Look in the hardware maintenance manual for the w500 ( link). You should be able to find the FRU# for the FingerPrint reader and can Google the FRU# to see what retailers stock the part.

However, installing the FingerPrint may be more complicated than you think. I would suggest looking through the hardware maintenance manual thoroughly before proceeding.

Thanks for the recommendation! That sounds like it will work.

I am not overly concerned about the mechanics of it. I have changed the processor in this laptop, and I suspect that the fingerprint reader isn't any more difficult than that.

Why do you need the fingerprint reader? It is more useful for tablets.

You would need to get another palm rest cover with the fingerprint reader. I am not sure but isn't the fingerprint reader connection soldered onto the motherboard? I am not sure if non-fingerprint readers have that connection on the motherboard.

To tell you the true truth, I don't know whether your right or wrong. I had a finger print reader on my t61p and I never made up my mind. Tommorrow maybe the day I find out because I get the t61p back from the police and I don't remember the password. So it'll be nice to see if the finger Print reader still works. If it doesn't, I'll have to resort to something else,

There's a connector on the motherboard for fingerprint reader. If you swap out the palmrest, then you just connect the new connector present in palmrests with fingerprint to that motherboard connector, and you're done.

What gives you the impression that it's more useful for tablets?

I didn't check back with the hardware manual, but just last weekend I was removing palmrest on my T60 14.1" and there's only 1 small rectangular connector that snaps onto the motherboard. My T60 does have fingerprint reader.

So tentatively, I'd say it's actually an extremely easy swap..
