I am not sure it was a good idea but since my keyboard was looking very grungy under the keycaps, I removed it and soaked it in water for an hour. I want to make sure it's dry before I reattach it to the laptop so I wanted to leave it off for two days. In the meantime is there any way to power up the machine and use it with a USB keyboard and mouse?

Only if you have a docking station as well. Otherwise, no.

you can, if you remove the cmos battery. The laptop will start when you plug in the power adapter.
