So I finally decided to go over budget and get the 15.4" T61p. I am concerned about the case quality. Is it the same as on the 14.1" T61p? I heard that the R61 15.4" versions have an easily-scratched material on the lid, is this the case with the 15.4" T61p?

The whole T series uses identical materials on the casing.

I got my T61p on monday and am typing this on it right now. I can tell you that this thing is built like a tank. No part of this laptop even feels flimsy. So far i haven't scrached the lid and its made from what seems to be very sturdy plastic that dosen't seem like it would scratch easily. And as 7evenduce said all the T series are made from the same materials. Don't worry about breaking this thing I could use it to bash other laptops and I still think it would be usable.

The case has great build quality, but don't think that this thing is indestructible. There are definitley points of flex and weakness, but it's very well put together, so there shouldn't be any worry over damage. As for the LCD cover, it is very adept to staining from people w/ oily hands. It's best described as a soft in touch, but very tough rubber material. Scratching shouldn't be an issue unless you're taking a paperclip and running it over the cover. Everyday use is bound to get the cover dirty, but it is easily cleaned up w/ soap and water. Feel confident that this machine will last you at least the next 5 years.

There is an outer coating on the lid that can get worn down a little bit. But it doesn't really look bad. It really just depends how gentle or rough you are with your laptop.

It feels the same as my X31, but I don't know if it is. the corners wore down to some shiny substrate on the X31 after about 4 years. FWIW.
