My 14" T43 2686DGU has flexing even when I open & close the laptop lid. Even the slightest touch of the laptop screen is causing some level of flexing.

NOTE: Flexing cannot be detected when windows are open or with a white background no matter how hard I press it. But with a lightly dark grey desktop background and no windows open, even the slightest touch of the back cover housing the LCD shows the flexing. (No matter where I touch, the flexing is always in the same particular patters)

I would greately appreciate if you fellow 14" owners perform the following tests and let us all know of your results:

    1. Please make you background Grey (the darker one) and minimize/close all open windows. (doing this will set a standard for measurement and will not cause any false results.

    2. Check if you can see or experience any flexing when tapping/pressing/closing-opening the lid etc.

    3. Please reply with your results with:

    (A) Your 14" model (mine is 2686DGU) and your LCD type such as SXGA or XGA etc and the

    (B) Your LCD FRU # that can be found at "Access IBM >> Get Help & Support >> Warranty & Parts Information" and look for something regarding display (eg on mine it says "FRU-14.1 SXGA+ SEC PB-FREE" and the FRU is 92P6760.

I just want to find out is there is a design issue with any particular model. I have read another user also mention that his 2686DGU has the same problem.

I have a 2668-71U, 14.1" screen with FRU 13N7046 - SXGA resolution. No screen flexing at all when tapping or opening/closing lid.

Is there any flex at all when u apply pressure on the back. I am making a note so that if some reason arises if i need to send this back to IBM, then I wii ask for the replacement of lcd with another FRU one.

I just tried it again...and it only happens if I press REALLY hard...and even when I do that, it does not occur every time. Normal tapping doesn't cause any flex.

That is more than satisfactory. I always had a wallpaper and never actually made my desktop all grey and now that I dide, I notice my screen slightly flexing even when I close and open the lid. I had placed my laptop on the same sofa i was sitting and every time I move around, the laptop slightly shakes and that too was causing some screen flexing, though its only like a small patch, its still there. When I press behind, there is an unacceptable amount of flexing. Its looks like the liquid is moving inside or something.

I am for sure calling IBM and asking for a replacement. But I want to figure out what FRU to ask for, otherwise they may fit in another 2686DGU screen, which I think has this issue. These are the things I hope to clarify from this post.

Ripple of some sort i would say, its like the some fluid inside the LCD is shaking. basically any sort of distortion in the display.

I think I may have a couple of possible workarounds to your problem:

1.) Stop pressing the back of your screen while using your laptop.

2.) If pressing the back of your screen for some reason is really important to you, then change your background color to something other than gray.

People asking for replacement and improvements on completely functional parts are the reason laptops are expensive. Stop whining.

Already got one. T43 2668. Not perfect, but it'll do the job.

And before you ask...it is a 15" with absolutely no flex what so ever. :)

I can understand. I have read several places that 15" ThinkPads have absolutely no or very minimal flexing. Such is not the case with 14" ones.
