    Hey

I am going to get the Thinkpad R61, and I was wondering how durable it is. I know it has a plastic case with a "roll-cage". By the feel of it, does it seem like it can last 3-4 years? I don't plan on treating it like a baby, yet I don't plan on destroying it.

Sooooo... Is the thing durable or not?

According to a lenovo employee on lenovoblogs, it's essentially the same as the T61

I am very pleased with the build of my R61. I have the 14" wxga. Very rigid casing. Very light it seems to me, at least compared to my old R40. I only have the 4-cell battery, however. All in all, I would recommend it. It is better build quality and performance than you're going to get out of any machine for the price. I would say if you don't abuse it you can definitely get 3-4 years out of it. I got 4 years out of my R40. Plus, they are shipping them pretty fast now. :)

yes all thinkpad laptops are meant to last. Physically speaking, the t61 is slightly thinner and weighs slighty less. The R series has magnesium a roll over cage which protects the computer if you drop it or something. This is something not offered in cheap comsumer laptops like the Dell Inspiron

If the R61 is anything like the R51 then I can tell you that it will easily last atleast 5 years. My R51 with it's plastic ABS casing seems even tougher than my new T61 even though it cant beat the magnesioum rollcage factor but still it seems like it will be able to withstand drops much better than the T61.

    hi,
only the 14" r61's have the display rollcage, and the material that they use in the case for the t61

the 15.4" r61s are basically made of the ABS plastic like r60 and r50s before that - that means they tend to be thicker and bulkier than the 15.4 t61s

durability-wise, i think the 15.4" t61s would be more durable (i.e., withstand a few more drops and kicks)

but under normal use, any thinkpad will last you at least three years.

i am very happy with my R61 (77441AU in canada). I have only had it for about a month now, but I love it.

I would consider doing a clean vista install when you get a couple hours of spare time. lenovo loads up the notebooks with a good serving of bloatware (see stallen's thread in this forum)
