My T410s seems to throttle down to below 300mhz when ever I try to do anything intense such as playing a 3D game.

My CPU temp has never gone above 80C.

The laptop rests on a dock with sufficent air flow and cooling.

I have the latest BIOS from Lenovo.

    Any ideas?

That sounds like something Dell would pull to keep from burning up the GPU.

What GPU do you have in your T410s?

How would I reproduce this issue on my T410s? What are you using to monitor the CPU? Would one of the built-in games do it? I don't have many games.

I am using a free tool called CPU-Z to monitor the frequency and Speedfan to monitor the temperature.

I am not using any built in games. I have a collection of 3D PC games. None of the built in Windows games are any where near demanding enough to reproduce the issue.

Didn't you say this also happens on HD movie playback? If so, what bitrate are the movies you are playing?

That issue would happen when I had multiple programs open (Outlook, Zune, Trillian, Seesmic, IE9) and tried to watch HD content from Revision3.com

As someone who has worked with a lot of Dell product, I'm wondering if you care to qualify that statment? I've never seen Dell do anything like this, including on my Latitude C840 P-4M laptop back when I had one.

OP, what are you using to measure temperatures? If you use TPFanControl and increase fan speeds to keep temperatures down, does the laptop still throttle under heavy load?

I think he's overgeneralizing and referring to the throttling issues with the Latitude E64x0 and E65x0 series.

Yes, I was referring to the throttling imposed by Dell on some of their models and BIOSes, documented everywhere. And no, I am not perturbed. I could care less. My T410s works very nicely but I don't use it for gaming or HD playback.

Excellent! I installed TPFan Control and it shows more accurate temperatures... I guess there was something wrong with the way SpeedFan was reading everything. The temps TPFan Control show are around 80-90C.

I switched control from BIOS to TPFan Smart and that pushes the fan about 1k faster which seems to be working so far. I will continue to test.

    Thanks!

If I can remember correctly, there was another person with a similar issue somewhere.... Update your video drivers?
