only the T8xxx and T9500 (has to be with FSB of 800 mhz) would work in the T61, it would also depend on the motherboard revision number (the Penryn use digital thermoprobe, while the older CPU use an analogue, so if you don't have the right motherboard, there maybe an error during startup about the wrong thermal measuring device). The T9xxx for your Thinkpad is pretty expensive, and probably not worth the effort (you should just sell the T61 and get the T400 instead)... while, the T8xxx CPU won't give you any sigificant performance increase.

did you post the same message in lenovo.com forum? In Europe new thinkpads are fairly expensive. If you are going to upgrade you will have to go with the T9xxx CPU with the 800 mhz FSB, anything else is just a waste of your time and money.

guess i'll start saving up for my i5 t410s

im seeing i can get the processors that are under 200 for the t7800 and the t8300 and i do plan on giving this notebook to my brother when i'm done with it.

those two processors you suggested would give you a performance boost of 5 to 10% max, unless your CPU is constantly running at 100% load when you use it, you would not even notice the performance increase.

Save your money by upgrading the ram and probably get a SSD, the bottleneck in your laptops are usually in the memory department and not the CPU.

    upgraded to 4gb
changed out HDD to a scorpio black 320
just seems like the processor could use a lil boost
